<br /> Mayor Buchan, on behalf of the Council and City staff, presented an engraved Redwood
<br /> City plaque, engraved pen, pencil and desk clock set, a proclamation, and a very creative
<br /> and comical set of facetious permits to Vice Mayor Claire, notorious for his long term
<br /> home improvement projects.
<br /> Vice Mayor Claire presented a plaque with the gavel she used during her term as Mayor,
<br /> to Mayor Buchan with great appreciation from the Council and staff.
<br /> Mayor Buchan thanked her family, colleagues, staff, everyone in attendance and every
<br /> citizen of Redwood City for their generosity and goodness during her term.
<br /> Councilman Greenalch said tonight his heart was filled with a great sense of gratitude
<br /> and a great sense of humility. Councilman Greenalch thanked all the employees of the
<br /> City, especially police and fire, the City Clerk's Office, the City Manager Office's, the City
<br /> Attorney's Office and three of his former Council colleagues in the audience, Bill Rhodes,
<br /> Brent Britschgi and Jack Murray. Councilman Greenalch related some of former City
<br /> Manager Jim Smith's funny and poignant comments to him over the years. He thanked the
<br /> press for being fair with him. Councilman Greenalch thanked all the citizens of Redwood
<br /> City; and especially Gus and Thetis Pappas, Nita Spangler, and Ralph Nobles who came to
<br /> Council meetings and took an interest in all City affairs. They didn't leave immediately
<br /> after their issue had been discussed, but stayed until the end of the meeting. On Sunday
<br /> past, when discussing how important it was not to be concerned only with one's own
<br /> issues, Councilman Greenalch's wife, Barbara said to him, "but after Monday night that's
<br /> what you are going to do." Councilman Greenalch thanked past and present Council
<br /> Members, and added that his proudest moment was the completion of the Canyon Road
<br /> Improvement Project, and his most difficult was the Sequoia Medical Office Building.
<br /> Councilman Greenalch wished the new Council good luck, and thanked his loving wife,
<br /> Barbara, his pride and his joy, and the love of his life.
<br /> Vice Mayor Claire recalled former City Manager Jim Smith's comments, and added that
<br /> there were so many people to thank. Vice Mayor Claire thanked former Council Member
<br /> Britschgi, his mentor who always has Redwood City at heart; Art Balsamo, a true
<br /> steadying force at Council meetings; City Attorney Schricker, who never led him down the
<br /> wrong path; Pat Valentine, who was always there for him. Vice Mayor Claire also
<br /> thanked outstanding Redwood City citizens Betty Moran; Nita Spangler, Ralph Nobles,
<br /> Peter Uccelli; and City staff who do their jobs twice as well as Palo Alto; Parks,
<br /> Recreation and Community Services Director Peter Griffiths; Planning Director Joel
<br /> Patterson; the Press; all the people in the Roster, the members of the Boards, Committees
<br /> and Commission. Vice Mayor Claire introduced his three children, daughter-in-law and
<br /> three grandchildren and his darling wife, Pat. Vice Mayor Claire offered special thanks to
<br /> his colleague, Councilman Greenalch, and asked the new Council to be kind to City staff
<br /> and never cast a politically correct vote, but always vote what is right at all times. Vice
<br /> Mayor Claire ended his remarks by thanking Jim Smith for his guidance and stating "I
<br /> know you are up there watching, Jim. God Bless you."
