MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
In response to Councilman Hartnett's request to schedule the discussion of $500,000
unexpended General Fund money to be used for public safety, City Manager Everett advised
that the Financial Report scheduled for the next Council Meeting, on December 19, 1994,
included that subject, and Council would be able to discuss it at that time.
MEMO 12/13/94
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. STAFF REPORTS
A Feasibility Study for the Consolidation of the Redwood City Fire Department and Menlo
Park Protection District (702-02)
REPORT: Fire Chief, November 21, 1994
Fire Chief Fink presented the staff report and described the purposes of a consolidation:
increase services and reduce costs. Chief Fink advised that one Fire Chief instead of two
and three Battalion Chiefs instead of six would result in a significant savings. Chief Fink
described the process and preliminary results the study would produce, and emphasized
that only a win/win proposal for all entities would be considered. In response to Council
questions, Chief Fink explained that he had not asked for the fire department personnel's
involvement in this effort yet because he was waiting for Council direction before
proceeding. Chief Fink guaranteed that if the Council approved the feasibility study
Redwood City Fire Department personnel would definitely be involved in the process.
Chief Fink described the trend towards regionalization and the state's desire to eliminate
special districts, adding that not all entities are ready to consolidate now, but Redwood
City and Menlo Park Protection District are ready to study the issue.
Regular Meeting Minutes MINUTE BOOK NO. 52
December 12, 1994 Page No. 461
Page 3
--,._~--'"""------ ---------""-------------'----,,,-- .-..,----.--------- ~ -- ------,--
