<br /> Council Members asked City Manager Everett for a report on amount of money <br /> the City grants to other private organizations and how much input City has <br /> into the groups' policies and operations. <br /> MEMO 3/3/92 <br />-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <br />4. PUBLIC COMMENT <br /> Mayor La Berge invited anyone who wished to speak on this subject to please <br /> do so. The following people addressed the Council: <br /> Geri Mayers, 2302 Broadway, Redwood City, stated this proposal did nothing <br /> for the downtown area; the $750 rental was too stiff for non profit groups; <br /> and the Peninsula Center Stage had not allowed local groups adequate access <br /> to the Fox Theatre in the past and without a binding agreement there were no <br /> assurances local groups would have access in the future. <br /> Ralph Nobles, 3720 country Club Drive, Redwood City, spoke in favor of the <br /> Task Force and its recommendations <br /> Bill Starr, 747 Rosewood Drive, Palo Alto, professional director at the <br /> Circle Star advised he had tried to interest the Peninsula Center Stage with <br /> a proposal for a Children's Academy and other activities that would be fund <br /> raisers with the proceeds to go back into the Theatre, but PCS denied him <br /> access to the Theatre. <br /> Dave Faussone, 819 Upland Road, Redwood City, accompanied by his wife and <br /> three daughters spoke in favor of the proposal, and described his family's <br /> positive experience with Peninsula Center Stage as actors and active , <br /> participants, and stated he was embarrassed when the City previously turned ' <br /> down a request for assistance by PCS. , <br /> ! <br /> Gladys Woodhams, 601 Melville Avenue, Palo Alto, spoke in favor of the <br /> proposal as a wonderful opportunity for quality cultural events. <br /> Michael Spicer, representing Peninsula Center Stage, spoke in favor of the <br /> proposal describing the experience and professionalism of the PCS. <br /> Robert Slusser, Chairperson of the Redwood City Parks and Recreation <br /> Commission, stated "the arts" cannot survive without sponsorship; it is <br /> vital that the City establish partnerships with local art groups; and <br /> the agreement with Peninsula Center Stage should be specific as to the use <br /> of the Theatre by Redwood City groups, and benefits to the building itself. <br /> Mr. Slusser suggested that squabbling be put aside and the twelve month <br /> experiment be allowed to go forward. <br /> Guy Bennett, member of the Redwood City Port Commission, spoke in favor of <br /> the proposal and described the successful negotiations his wife's theatrical <br /> group had with Peninsula Center Stage for their comedy night last year, and <br /> encouraged the City and PCS to commit to higher maintenance for the <br /> Theatre. <br /> Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes <br /> March 2, 1992 MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 <br /> Page 6 Page No. 011 <br /> -'" .._, <br />
