Councilman Murray requested daily operating cost figures from the
representatives of the Peninsula Center Stage, Mike and Ken Spicer.
MEMO 3/17/92
Helen Graves, 371 Idyllwild, also stated the main problem was access to
the Theatre by local and non-profit groups, and expressed support for tying
the $30,000 grant to maintenance or insurance, and asked why PCS didn't seek
other sponsors. Mrs. Graves stated that if the Council approved this grant,
PCS would return every year asking for additional funding.
In answer to Councilman Claire's questions, Mayor La Berge advised that the
City had approached the Peninsula Center Stage and asked them if they would
be interested in putting on performances at the Fox Theatre with a grant
from the Redevelopment Agency; and, the Fox Theatre Task Force with
memberships from the Council, the Peninsula Center Stage, the Historic
Resources Advisory Committee, the Downtown Association and the Chamber had
decided upon the amounts of $30,000 to PCS and $15,000 to the Civic Cultural
Commission.
Ernest Wuthmann, Redwood City Resident and member of the Peninsula Center
Stage Board of Directors described how the City of Redwood City approached
PCS and his involvement with the Task Force. In answer to Council
questions, Mr. Wuthman advised that the Palo Alto Players and Peninsula
Center Stage were entirely separate entities and no funds ever commingle,
apologized for not knowing exact figures requested by Council, and advised
that PCS does want to share the Fox Theatre as much as possible. Also, Mr.
Wuthman agreed PCS would keep specific records, including requests from
outside groups to use the Theatre, and provide detailed information to the
Council at the end of the twelve month experiment.
Mayor La Berge advised two more members would be added to the Fox Theatre
Task Force: Planning Commission Chairman Paul Sanfilipo and Senior Affairs
Vice Chairman Jack Anthony. Also, the Task Force would concentrate on
guaranteeing access, maintenance and preservation of the Theatre.
M/S: STANGEL/GREENALCH FOR CONCEPTUAL APPROVAL OF THE FOX THEATRE TASK
FORCE RECOMMENDATIONS.
Councilman Claire asked the originator and seconder of the motion if they
would add the following stipulations to RECOMMENDATION NO.4:
1) THAT ACCOUNTABILITY FOR PRODUCTION COSTS IN REDWOOD CITY BE PROVIDED
TO THE TASK FORCE; AND
2) THAT ACCESS ACCOUNTABILITY BE REPORTED TO THE TASK FORCE SO RESPONSES
TO REQUESTS FOR USE OF THE THEATRE COULD BE DOCUMENTED
Both the originator and seconder agreed to the addition.
Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 92-030
Regular Meeting Agenda
March 16, 1992
Page 6 MINUTE BOOK NO. 51
Page No. 25
1 "--""" '.'r-""""""" ...-....
