CITY COUNCIL MEMBER REPORT OF CONFERENCE/MEETING ATTENDANCE On Thursday March 10, 2016 Council Members attended the Sequoia Awards 25th Anniversary at the Sofitel Hotel in Redwood City. This event awarded close to 500 scholarships to students in the last 25 years, and many community members came out to celebrate such an accomplishment. Founding members were present and a video about the genesis of this program was shared and enjoyed by all. This program is unique in that the awards/scholarships given out are based on service to the community, instead of athletic or academic performance. The individual volunteer of the Year award went to Mr. Alyn Beals, and the Business being recognized for volunteering was DPR Architects. All awardees are selected by the amount of volunteering they do. Also noteworthy was the fact that the first recipient of the first Sequoia Awards Scholarship was flown in from Texas to share his experience. The first recipient was Mr. Tony Campbell. The various donors of these scholarships – individuals and businesses from the community –were recognized for their generosity. Reports must be submitted to the City Clerk of no later than the Wednesday of the week before the next City Council meeting. Reports must be submitted before the City of Redwood City will pay per diem or reimbursement for the conference or the meeting.
