PUBLIC COMMENT

Mr. Aknin, Acting City Manager, stated that there are several apartment buildings that
were approved as apartment buildings and are currently being rented as corporate
housing. He stated that some are allowing people to rent on a daily or weekly basis. He
commented that the apartment owners have been sent a notice that they are not in
compliance with the Code and Housing Policy. Staff will be bringing forward further
Housing Policy options to the Council in the next couple of months.

Carrie Jackson spoke about the need for the Council to look at options for promoting
pollinator health in the city.

Aimee Bailey stated that the current bee keeping ordinance is very restrictive and is one
of the most restrictive in the Bay Area. She spoke about the federal government’s
efforts to support honey bees and native pollinators, noting that it’s important to do some
work at the local level as well.

Phil Larochelle stated that the pros of a less restrictive bee policy would outweigh the
cons. He spoke about the importance of bees to the environment and agriculture. He
stated that the current ordinance would only allow very wealthy residents with extremely
large properties to be able to have bees in Redwood City. He stated that it’s important
to get people interested in bees to start getting people thinking about solving the
pollinator problem.

Peter Broadwell, a resident of Palo Alto, spoke about the work of the Bee Guild in
researching the policies in the cities, what’s happening with bees throughout the country,
and educating people about them.

Council Member Seybert stated that he met a few years ago with a representative of the
Bee Guild. He stated that it makes sense for the City Council to look into relaxing the
ordinance. Council Member Howard stated that she is interested in learning more and
seeing how the City can help.

6.1.F. - Page 5
