,, Redwood City : December 1976 PARKS LEADER DEFINITION Serves as a leader of a crew or crews in the installation and maintenance of park , landscaped areas , or street trees ; does related work as required . DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF ‘ THE CLASS A Park Leader serves as a working leader of a crew performing duties in the maintenance of park , landscaped areas and street trees . Work assign- ments are received from a Park Supervisor who regularly inspects the work performed for compliance with standards , EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY ) Assigns maintenance tasks and takes the lead in completing maintenance and installation assignments ; supervises and takes the lead in planting , fertilizing , watering and trimming trees ; assigns maintenance tasks to subordinates and inspects work in process and upon completion ; works with crews and skilled help in the completion of assignments ; operates required park maintenance equipment ; instructs and directs employees in proper and safe operating methods ; supervises and participates in applying fertilizers and fungicides , planting , pruning , mowing and watering activities ; keeps working and time records of subordinate employees ; requisitions supplies , equipment and materials ; supervises and participates in maintaining turf areas by mowing , trimming , edging , spraying and performing closely related tasks ; operates , makes minor repairs and adjusts sprinklers ; supervises and participates in setting up benches , tables and other equipment for group recreation activities ; takes the lead and oversees the cleaning and routine repairing of buildings . Personally participates in tree trimming and topping activities ; operates and maintains chain saws and other light and heavy equipment utilized in tree maintenance ; reviews forestry work requests and work orders to determine the pruning required and whether the tree should be removed ; makes periodical inspections of trees . REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES , SKILLS AND ABILITIES Good knowledge of park maintenance operations and tree cultivation practicE such as seeding , sodding , rolling , mowing , raking and sprinkling of turf , trimming , spraying and pruning of trees or shrubs , and the care of flowers ; good knowledge of tree removal , planting , watering and trimming ; some knowledge of landscape and street tree insects and diseases and the common physiological problems associated with trees and landscaped areas ; practical working knowledge of accident prebiention practices applicable to park and tree maintenance activities ; some skill in making minor repairs and adjustments to hand and power tools ; ability to lay out and supervise the work of others ; ability to climb trees and perform heavy manual duties relating to tree care ; ability to keep records and reports , and to work from oral and written instructions ; ability to maintain satisfactory work- ing relationships with others ; excellent physical condition .
