City of Redwood City <br /> December 1976 <br /> • <br /> DEFINITION <br /> GARDENER/CARETAKER <br /> Under general supervision performs routine and skilled park and landscaped <br /> area maintenace work in the planting and cultivating of lawns , flowers , <br /> plants , shrubs and trees ; does related work as required . <br /> EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> Maintains plants , flowers and shrubs by pruning , thinning , spraying and <br /> staking ; maintains lawns by mowing , trimming , edging and spraying for ' <br /> fungi and other lawn diseases ; transplants flowers , cultivates and <br /> prepares soil for various kinds of planting ; seeds new lawns , inspects <br /> lawns and plants for diseases ; waters plants and lawns ; sprays for control <br /> of pests and plant diseases ; operates light equipment such as power lawn <br /> mowers , rototillers , sprayers and edgers ; picks up paper and debris ; assists <br /> in moving and installing park and recreational equipment and facilities ; <br /> assists in installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems including <br /> operating and adjusting sprinklers ; performs basic maintenance work in <br /> keeping tools and other supplies in proper condition ; rakes leaves , cleans <br /> walks , fields , courts , restrooms and other facilities ; loads trimmings in <br /> power chipper or on truck ; operates dump truck in hauling refuse , sand , <br /> dirt , tables , and bleachers . <br /> REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> Good knowledge of park maintenance operations such as the seeding , sodding , <br /> rolling , mowing , raking and sprinkling of turf ; spraying and pruning of <br /> trees and shrubs , and the care of flowers ; practical working knowledge of <br /> accident prevention practices applicable to park maintenance operations ; <br /> practical knowledge of equipment and tools used in park maintenance <br /> activities ; some skill in making minor repairs and adjustments to hand and <br /> power equipment ; ability to work from oral and written instructions ; <br /> excellent physical condition . <br /> EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING <br /> Some experience as a laborer or park caretaker involving the maintenance of <br /> parks and landscaped areas and completion of some technical courses in <br /> horticulture or related field ; or any equivalent combination of experience <br /> and gaining which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities . <br /> es <br /> "EXHIBIT C " <br />
