6.1.B. - Page 4
May 9. 2016
The Honorable Kevin Mullin
State Assemblymember
State Capitol Room 3160
Sacramento, CA 94249-2022
The Honorable David Chiu
State Assemblymember
State Capitol Room 2196
Sacramento, CA 94249-0017
Re: Support for AB 2502: Local Inclusionary Housing Policies
The City of Redwood City is writing to express support for AB 2502, which would protect the ability of
jurisdictions to implement inclusionary requirements for rental housing.
Local inclusionary housing programs in California have proven to be effective tools for producing new
homes that would be affordable to working families and creating strong, diverse neighborhoods with a
arrange of housing choices. San Mateo County is experiencing an affordability crisis of historic
proportions. High housing costs crowd out family spending on necessities, such as food and health care.
Inclusionary housing programs help local jurisdictions address the affordable housing shortage and the
significant increase in housing costs seen over the past several years.AB 2502 would expand a
jurisdictions ability to produce a wider range of housing types, specifically, rental housing.
Redwood City is a leader among Peninsula cities in establishing affordable housing policies and
programs. In December 2015, the City was one of the first on the Peninsula to adopt an updated
affordable housing impact fee. In October 2015,the City amended its Accessory Dwelling Unit
regulations with the purpose of generating more affordable housing opportunities throughout the City.
Later this month, the City is expected to amend the Downtown Precise Plan residential unit cap to
designate a significant percentage of those residential units as affordable.
AB 2502 would provide the City with an additional tool to produce affordable rental housing within our
community. The City of Redwood City strongly supports AB 2502.
Sincerely,
John Seybert
Mayor, City of Redwood City
cc: City Council
