REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

June 27, 2016

SUBJECT
Civic Cultural Commission's Fiscal Year 2016-2017 Funding Recommendations for Large
Grants

RECOMMENDATION
By motion, approve the Civic Cultural Commission's Proposed Funding
Recommendations for Large Grants for FY 2016-2017 as delineated in Attachment 1

BACKGROUND
The Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission (CCC) on behalf of the City Council, is
responsible for supporting and enhancing cultural life in Redwood City. The CCC
accomplishes this goal by issuing grants to community nonprofit organizations that
support art and cultural activities through criteria developed by the Commission. The
CCC receives funding from the City Council to issue these grants. For Fiscal Year 2016-
2017, a total of $58,896 is available for large grants (i.e. grants over $1,000), small grants
(under $1,000), and Commission-sponsored events. In March 2005, the CCC adopted a
Strategic Plan which identified the following priority areas for financial support:

· Development of Downtown as the City’s cultural center;
· Arts programs at both the elementary and secondary school levels;
· Community-building events that celebrate the diversity of our community and
support local arts organizations;
· Programs that focus on a senior audience;
· Increased investment in public art;
· Alternative funding sources for the arts

ANALYSIS
On June 2, 2016, the Civic Cultural Commission met to consider large grant funding
recommendations for Fiscal Year 2016-2017. The Commission discussed the grant
applications and recommends allocating $42,650 of its total budget of $58,896 for large
grants. Seventeen local nonprofit cultural and arts organizations submitted large grant
requests totaling
$78,350.00.

6.1.A. - Page 1
