Senior Engineer Moen stated that they had received a letter
from the P. G. & E. stating that they did not object to allowing this permit for a 3' extension into the
"Ai
easement. City Attorney Currie stated that the Council could abandon a portion of the easement or
Mr. Harrison -could take a chance that the City would not use this property. DANCING PERMIT AT CLIFF'S PITT, 46 WILLow
STREET. The following application was presented to each member of the Council:
The applicant, Clifton Huddleton, requests a permit to allow dancing at his restaurant,
"Cliff's Ba -B-Q Pit", 46 Willow Street, Redwood City, California.
A previous application for such a permit, made several months ago, was denied. However,
the objections which led to the rejection of the former application - and it is admitted that
such objections were valid - can be overcome by various proposals discussed in the following
paragraphs*
It appears that the main objections were as follows:
(1) A hazardous parking problem would ensue: Applicant has now made arrangements
for off-street parking in a lot measuring 100 x 173 feet, which would accommodate
approximately 60 cars. An attendant would be on duty at all times when the lot is in
use.
(2) Under former ownership, dances at this location drew enormous crowds which often MIR
got out of hand: The former owner advertised the dances and hired bands. Applicant would
do no advertising whatsoever, and would have only a juke boa and a small dancing area,
and a four -piece band for dancing on Sundays only.
(3) This location was formerly a "trouble spot": Since applicant has been in this
location, there have been no disturbances on his premises. He has been successfuly in
insisting that hii patrons conduct themselves properly, and the place now enjoys an
excellent reputation.
Yp
1
(4) The city cannot afford to supervise the activities: Applicant proposes that
special duputies be appointed, at applicant's expense, whenever, in the discretion of the
Chief of Police, supervision by such deputies is desirable. The times of duty and number
of such deputies would be discretionary with the Chief of Police.
In addition to the above, applicant present the following affirmative arguments for
the granting of a dancing permit:
Applicant's establishment is located in an area where there are several rooming house
in which persons have, on.occasion, required police assistance. An establishment of the
type proposed by applicant would provide a healthy outlet for energies that might otherwise
