R O COUNCILMAN ROPER REPORTED ON LOT "A" NEXT TO THE Y.M.C.A. BUILDING ON HUDSON STREET. Councilman Royer reported that it Was the Real Estate Committee's feeling that the property be kept by the City and possibly leased for five year -period to the Y.M.C.A. Councilman Royer moved that this be baken tip by the City Manager to contact the Y.M.C.A. in an effort to obtain the five year lease With the thought in mind that they may lease the area at an amount Which would pay for one half of the assessment, seconded by Councilman Spillers. This Was followed by discussion in regard to the estimated $3,000 street and drainage assessment soon to be levied on this property and Whether or not the City should invest this much more money for the particular lot. Motion carried. FINAL PAYMENT REDWOOD CREEK CHANNEL IMPROVEMENT, PARKING DISTRICT NO. 19 Carl N. Swenson Co„ Inc., contractor, in the amount of X617,892.04, was ordered paid on motion of Councilman Stout, seconded by Councilman Spillers and carried. The County Manager and the District Attorney have been in frequent conference with representatives of your city regarding the possibility of having this portion of East Fuller Street closed. By closing, it will provide approximately an additional one-half acre of parking and possibly facilitate traffic flow. -Without the closing of this portion of East Fuller, however, the value of the portion of Block 6 to the County would be negligible. It is respectfully requested that you Honorable Council give serious consideration to the closing of East Fuller Street between Fuller Street and Hamilton Street, conditioned upan the County's acquiring portion of Block 6, Range E. Town of Mezesville, as detailed on the attached plat. Councilman Granger stated that he was of the opinion that the City should look favorably upon this and the Council should consider the possibility of a free parking lot. The County will purchase the property and share it with the City. This was followed by discussion in regard to how this would affect the efficiency of the Police and Fire Departments for calls in that particular area. Also under discussion was how the closing of this street would affect the assessed value of the property in the area. City Engineer Jain stated that there was a problem in regard to the utility easements,•the City should ask for this easement as a condition to closing the street. Councilman Granger moved that the Council notify the -Board of Supervisors that they are in favor of joining in the off street parking but there is a problem of drainage and utility easements which should be considered, seconded by Councilman Spillers. Councilman Britschgi questioned the fairness of abandoning this street without notifying the people in the area. City Attorney Currie stated that the Council would have to hold a public hearing if they abondon the street. This was followed by discussion after which the motion carried. PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION -AWARDING AUTOMATIC CROSSING GATES AND POSSIBLE CLOSING OF MAPLE STREET AND CEDAR STREET. The Clerk read the following letter: Subsequent to the Commission's meeting held at San Mateo City Hall on January 199 1956 for the purpose of installing automatic crossing gates or closing the crossings on:: Southern Pacific Company's San Francisco -San Jose line, a meeting between represent- atives of'.the City of Redwood City, Southern Pacific Company and this Commission was held in the City Manager's office at Redwood City to plan a program for the proposed installation of automatic crossing gates and/or the closing of railroad crossings at grade within the city limits of Redwood City. During the informal discussion among all participants at the conference, matters condidered were: vehicular traffic delay, safety, future street plans, length of railroad trains; approximate number of automatic crossing gate installations, priority list of streets where automatic crossing gates will be installed and the proposed closing of crossings. It appeared feasible that the city participate in the proposed installation of automatic crossing gates at the rate of two crossings per year, the priority of the proposed installations being as follows: D G E
