Beekeeping in Redwood City

Why is beekeeping important?
Bees play a critical role in our environment and economy with roughly onethird of our food supply directly
pollinated by bees. The use of pesticides and herbicides, and the increase in prevalence of disease, parasites,
and other maladies have decimated bee populations, including in San Mateo County.

How does beekeeping in Redwood City compare to other similar cities?
Neighboring cities such as Menlo Park, Atherton, Belmont, and East Palo Alto have much more progressive
policies in place. Redwood City has an ordinance that restricts backyard beekeeping for a large number of
residents. Many residents would like to beekeep to promote local pollinators and are currently unable to do so
on their own properties. A comparison table is provided on the next page.

What can be done in Redwood City?
●Update the ordinance to ensure that residents are able to support local pollinators.
●Enable residents to be able to enjoy a passionate pastime.
●Adopt a progressive beekeeping policy, which will inspire other cities to follow.
●Educate the community about the benefits of beekeeping.

Our Recommendation
We believe that the current ordinance can be mildly adjusted to allow reasonable beekeeping in the city,
similar to our neighboring cities.

=

1
7.
A
.

-

P
a
g
e

7
