to allow room on the agenda for oral communications from non-Commissioners
to speak regarding these issues. A discusssion was held regarding this
matter and it was decided that Housing be included on the April agenda.
Debbie Jones-Thomas, the City's Housing Coordinator and a representative
from Shared Housing will be asked to speak regarding this topic. The issue
of volunteer liability will be included in the May agenda. Commissioner
Anthony will contact Senior Assemblywoman Phebe Bostwick of the California
Senior Legislature to speak at the May meeting regarding this issue. A
representative from the Volunteer Program of San Mateo County will also be
asked to address the Commission at the same meeting.
ITEM 3 - Human Services Financial Assistance
Center Coordinator Centeno explained that the Human Services Financial
Assistance Program has been in existence for over 15 years and makes
grants to local non-profit agencies. Applications from local non-profit
agencies go to the City Council and then are forwarded to the Housing and
Human Concerns Committee for presentation and review. The total budget for
the Fiscal Year 90-91 was $189,000.00. This budget is treated like any
other city budget and last year was reduced $10,000.00. The Housing and
Human Concerns Committee makes recommendations to the City Council, who
hears requests from individual agencies/groups and makes budget decisions
accordingly. Center Coordinator Centeno distributed a hand-out to the
Commissioners that explained the program in detail . She noted that on
April 10 at 5:00pm requests to the Housing and Human Concerns Committee
will be presented from local agencies for funding. The Commissioners are
invited to attend this meeting.
ROUNDTABLE
Chairperson Jordan stated that the regulations for the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) are out and open for comment. Because of the time
frame involved, it was decided to put this matter on the April agenda.
Also included on the April agenda will be Superintendent Ron Crates of the
Redwood City School District to speak about the district's budget problems
and ways to correct the problems, and a representative from City government
to speak about the impact of tax and utility fee increases to seniors.
The Housing issue will be deferred to the May agenda.
Library Supervisor Val Hamilton will check at the Library to determine if
copies of the ADA regulations have been received so they can be forwarded
to the Commissioners. Center Coordinator Centeno will check with Eldon
Luce of CID to see if he has some information that could be shared with the
Commission regarding the new ADA regulations at our April meeting.
Center Coordinator Centeno advised the Commission that Ruben Barrales,
Vincent Truscelli and she were invited to serve on Bay Area Bank's
Community Reinvestment Act Advisory Committee.
