ITEM 3 - Update on R.C. School District Citizens Action Council
Superintendent Hartman said that the Citizens Action Council has disbanded
as a monthly activity and separate groups have been formed to participate
in the "Best Schools" proposal or parcel tax initiative. The County will
be placing the "Best Schools" proposal on the November ballot (Measure A)
which will be a 1/2c sales tax increase in the county. Funds from this
ballot measure will help to bring schools up to the average school revenue
limit in the State. She said there is a possibility that the school
district would then proceed with a parcel tax to further assist its
schools.
She noted that on October 11, Dr. Ron Crates will be speaking on a panel
discussion entitled "The Future of of Our Schools" and invited all to
attend. This panel discussion will be held at the Veterans Memorial Senior
Center from 8:30am-3:30pm.
ITEM 4 - Senior Center Reports
Executive Director Maria Bransford gave a report about the Fair Oaks Senior
Center. She reported that the Center is providing various classes for
seniors in addition to two health screenings a month. She said that the
San Mateo Second Harvest Food Bank is providing a brown bag of food every
Friday for needy persons and 102 people were registered for the last
give-away. She mentioned that an intern from the Hispanic Gerontology
Training Program in Los Angeles is working with the Center and is preparing
a feasibility study regarding adult day care in the hispanic community.
Director Bransford said her staff is busy with direct services and that 290
hours were devoted last month to comprehensive assessment. She also
mentioned that the Center will be having a spaghetti dinner fund raiser on
Saturday, September 14 to raise money for a new bus. The cost of the
tickets will be $5.00 per person.
Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor Chris Oliver gave a report about the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center and reviewed the classes being offered
this fall . She mentioned that because the Sequoia Adult School had a
recent $100,000 budget cut, they were forced to eliminate a popular Monday
morning exercise class. The Veterans Senior Center has raised over $1,000
during the past 9 months for a instructor's fund to help subsidize
salaries. She explained about the possible need for more fund raisers to
help raise money to maintain the Instructor's Fund because of cutbacks
faced by the Sequoia Adult School and the Community College District. Ms.
Oliver also mentioned that Dr. David Thornburg, an internationally known
consultant and educator, will also be speaking on the panel at "The Future
of Our Schools" presentation on October 11. She said that he normally
charges $2,000-$5,000 per speaking engagement but has agreed to waive his
normal fee for this event. She mentioned that there will also be
representatives from Canada College, Sequoia Adult School , and the
elementary school district on the panel .
