Chairperson Anthony felt that questions need to be raised regarding the
more frail and elderly population and how they are falling "through the
cracks".
Chairperson Anthony, Commissioners Lloyd and Berglund were selected to
serve on a committee to develop the senior questionnaire. Commissioner
Berglund was appointed as chair of this committee. Chairperson Anthony
will contact the Fair Oaks Senior Center to get a representative on the
committee. The questionnaire will be printed by the Department and
distributed to the seniors through the two senior centers.
ITEM 2 - Commission Handbook Review
The Commissioner's Handbook Committee reported that they had reviewed the
following sections: The Brown Act, Commissions Working Together, and
Alcohol in Facilities.
The Committee recommended that no Commissioner would serve more than two
consecutive terms (page 47). Superintendent Hartman will contact the City
Attorney' s Office to see if this could be changed without creating an
ordinance change.
The Committee felt the handbook was well laid out and found it very
interesting and informative. The Committee suggested posting signs in the
senior centers stating that only beer, wine or champagne could be served.
It was also suggested the Senior Affairs Commission minutes be posted
monthly at each senior center.
ITEM 3 - Transportation
Chairperson Anthony reported that the Commission on Aging had assigned
people to try out the North County taxicab pilot program offered by
SamTrans to see how it works. He mentioned that the program will be
monitored monthly and quarterly reports will be made. The program will be
put out to bid at the end of the pilot program (December 1992). It was
noted that approval to use the cab service must be done 24 hours in advance
through SamTrans. Chairperson Anthony said the eligibility criteria is
being developed for this program, but currently Rediwheels criteria is
being used.
He noted that taxicab service is a big undertaking with lots of problems
that will need to be resolved. In addition, funding to pay for this
service is not really available.
ITEM 4 - Steve Penna's Proposal
M/S: Lloyd/Truscelli : That the Senior Affairs Commission approve
Steve Penna's concept of developing a community
based theater program in Redwood City.
Motion passed.
It was mentioned that another priority of seniors is to have more cultural
activities for seniors to attend.
