ITEM 5-TRANSPORTATION
Chairperson Anthony reported that Vince Truscelli, President of the Senior
Advisory Council, held a meeting to discuss the type of van needed for the
Center and the ramifications of selecting different types of vans. Mr. Truscelli
was advised by SamTrans that effective January 1, 1995, a Class B license
would be required to transport people regardless of the capacity of the vehicle.
Commissioner Jordan will check on this requirement and report back to the
Commission. Mr. Truscelli and his group also discussed purchasing a large
van/bus which could accommodate 16-20 people. There was some question if
the City was going to pay for insurance, maintenance and gas of the proposed
vehicle. It was confirmed with Superintendent Hartman that the City would
pay for insurance, maintenance and gas for the vehicle.
Chairperson Anthony said the City has agreed to purchase a van for the
accessible recreation program separately so the van purchased by the seniors
will not have to be shared.
MATTERS OF COMMISSION INTEREST
-Cable TV at Redwood City Commons
Chairperson Anthony said someone has brought to his attention that seniors
at Redwood City Commons are not being allowed to have cable TV installed.
He would like to survey other senior housing facilities such as Casa de
Redwood, to see if they have installed cable TV. He also suggested speaking
with HUD and the Conflict Resolution Center to try and resolve the problem.
Noreen Donohue, a resident of Redwood City Commons, noted the tenants
are afraid to pursue the matter because it is a government subsidized facility.
She said the owner is not obligated by HUD to put cable in the facility. She
also mentioned the building has numerous roof leaks and the owner is more
concerned over the cost of this problem. The Commissioners discussed the
fact that at various facilities, the seniors pay for cable TV services monthly.
Commissioner Newell suggested speaking to the director of Bonnie Brae
Terrace in Belmont for more information on how they handle this issue.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
-Commissioner Newell said there is going to be a public hearing on a
proposed rate increase for RediWheels at 2:00pm today at the SamTrans
Offices. He also announced a full day forum on health care reform sponsored
by the League of Women Voters will be held on Friday, September 16 at
College of San Mateo. The Commission on Aging can be contacted for more
details.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at
10:40am to be reconvened at 9:00am on Wednesday, October 12, 1994 to be
held at the Fair Oaks Senior Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City,
California.
