Motion passed. (6-yes, 1-no)
ITEM 4-TRANSPORTATION
Commissioner Newell said he passed out a plan in September suggesting that
some of the Commissioners meet with key senior groups at senior centers
and at senior housing locations to discuss their problems with the
Redi-Wheels program. He asked that someone from Redi-Wheels come to a
future transportation forum to discuss their program. Commissioner Newell
said he was continuing to work on organizing a transportation forum.
ITEM 5-HOUSING
Commissioner Newell said he spoke to Debbi Jones-Thomas, the Housing
and Human Concerns Committee and Bob Bury concerning his proposal for
older adults in HUD-sponsored housing. The program is designed for frail
seniors who are not eligible for Medi-Cal but are forced to use up all their
funds in order to pay for housing, or be forced to go into a nursing home. In
order to keep these seniors out of a nursing home, Commissioner Newell
would like to begin a pilot program where the City would contract at an
affordable rate to bring someone in to help provide needed services to these
seniors. He will continue his work on this matter.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
-Superintendent Hartman announced the Grand Opening of the new Red
Morton Center to be held on Saturday, January 20 from 10am-4pm, with the
dedication ceremony to begin at 11:00am. Chairperson Lloyd is helping to
provide refreshments for the event.
-Commissioner Newell announced Gordon Manor, a new board and care
facility, has opened at 1616 Gordon Avenue.
-The Optimist Club will be holding a Crab and Shrimp Feed on Saturday,
March 16, 1996 at 6:00pm at the Community Activities Building.
-Chairperson Lloyd announced that Commissioner Walsh is running as the
San Mateo County representative for the California Senior Legislature.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at
5:00pm to be reconvened at 3:00pm on Thursday, February 8, 1996 at the
Senior Center Annex, 711 Nevada Street, Redwood City, California.
