Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, July 23, 1997 <br /> Chairperson Walsh noted the Commission would be meeting on August 29 <br /> at 3:00pm with Kaiser regarding in-home support; will set a meeting with <br /> Sequoia Hospital to review after one year. <br /> Linda Griffith mentioned that a death in her own family was quickened by <br /> reduced benefits available through in-home care, skilled or unskilled, noting <br /> that in-home assessment is not happening. <br /> Gene jennett noted he was told that it was too late to voice concerns. <br /> Chairperson Walsh noted that the bill had not been signed into law. <br /> Pauline Truscelli noted AARP members have received a letter to write or call <br /> their representatives even indicating why too late; e.g. we are those who are <br /> intended to serve. <br /> Alex Meyer commented on Medicare fraud article on costs of audits vs. <br /> savings in the program. <br /> Larry Estavan of the Veterans of Foreign Wars recommended greater review <br /> of fraud and request to have improved training for home care health workers <br /> and hospital staff. <br /> Betty Moran urged everyone to write letters and tell friends to do likewise as <br /> it does make a difference. <br /> Commissioner M. Walsh stated she felt the monies were going to HMO CEO's <br /> vs. into patient care. <br /> Chairperson Walsh asked for recommendations summarizing that there is a <br /> consensus. He urged that a letter be written to those indicated on HICFA. He <br /> also provided phones numbers for Senators and Representative Eshoo. <br /> The Commissioners decided to develop a letter stating the Commission's <br /> position including: <br /> -The lack of a satisfactory response to the Medicare fraud issue. <br /> -The reduction in services/costs, but no savings to premium payers or <br /> Medicare costs. <br /> -And all items contained in the HICAP analysis. <br /> M/S M. Walsh/Moran: To develop a letter on behalf of the Commission. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> Commissioner Walsh thanked the Commission for the valuable information <br /> and her concern that fewer people attended. <br />
