Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday, August 14, 1997
Commissioner Anthony commented on Superintendent Centeno's memo dated
7-8-97. He stated that the Veterans Memorial Senior Center could lose their
501c3 status if the City continues to advertise the facility as a community center
rather than a senior center. He also said that using the Veterans Memorial
Senior Center Advisory Council's name on the return address of the quarterly
recreation brochures will cause problems with the IRS and cause the non-profit
status to be revoked.
Item #1 of VMSC Report: "The Center shall be re-established as the Veterans
memorial Senior Center not a community center. All communications, whether
oral or written, shall reflect this re-establishment."
Roll Call Vote on Item #1:
In favor- 4 (L.Walsh, Moran, Anthony, Lloyd)
Against - 3 (Harrison, M.Walsh)
Abstain - 1 (Newell)
Passed.
Item #2 of VMSC Report: "The Senior Affairs Commission (SAC) shall be
recognized as a full partner along with the Parks, Recreation and Community
Services (PRCS) in establishing policy concerning the operation of the senior
center." Commissioner Anthony amended Item #2 to read: "The SAC shall
participate in the budget procedure in so far as it affects the VMSC."
Roll Call Vote on Item #2:
In favor- 5 (L.Walsh, Moran, Anthony, Lloyd, Newell)
Against - 2 (Harrison, M.Walsh)
Passed.
Item #3 of the VMSC Report: "The SAC shall designate one of its members, and
an alternate, to attend all PRCS meetings that can have an effect on the senior
center in any way. (Building, grounds, personnel, policy, volunteers, etc.)"
Commissioner Anthony amended Item 3 to read: "A copy of the VMSC budget
(Subprogram: Senior Services 66170) along with written objectives prior to
submission to the City Council shall be submitted to the SAC for its review and
comments."
Roll Call Vote on Item #3:
In favor- 7 (L.Walsh, Moran, Anthony, Harrison, Lloyd, Newell, M.Walsh)
Passed unanimously.
Item #4 of VMSC Report: "The SAC shall have access to all data concerning the
VMSC, and requests for the same should be forthcoming without delay and with
abridgment."
