Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, October 9, 1997 <br /> Commissioner Newell suggested Pam Thornberg as a possible speaker on the <br /> Intergenerational Programs for our luncheon series. <br /> Under Public Safety, the Commissioners agreed to delete item #3 "Carrier <br /> Alert" and item #4 regarding parking lot safety. The group wished to <br /> continue with the code enforcement objective. Finally, the group agreed to <br /> added an objective regarding pedestrian safety which would include receipt <br /> of an informational report and possible recommendations from the <br /> Committee. Further discussion on the workplan was tabled for the <br /> November meeting. <br /> Commissioner Newell reported that two senior citizens had been killed on El <br /> Camino Real in a crosswalk and he asked for an informational report on <br /> pedestrian accidents in the City with a goal of providing information to older <br /> adults or recommending the length of time walk signs remain green be <br /> increased. The Commission will return to this item at the November <br /> meeting. <br /> ITEM 3 — CALIFORNIA SENIOR LEGISLATURE CONFERENCE 10-20-97 <br /> Chairperson Walsh announced he would be attending the Senior Legislature <br /> and described the proposal for Campaign Finance Reform he will be <br /> submitting. <br /> ITEM 4 — DETERMINE DATE FOR ANNUAL ELECTION OF COMMISSION <br /> OFFICERS <br /> The Commissioners agreed that the election of the Chairperson and Vice <br /> Chairperson would take place at the November meeting and that the <br /> Commission would cancel its December meeting. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> -Commissioner Moran will be attending the Senior Conference on October 24 <br /> at the Airport Hilton. She also invited the Commissioners to attend the <br /> Heritage Association dinner on October 19 at 5:00pm at the Redwood City <br /> Elks Club. <br /> -Commissioner Harrison announced that the second Senior Affairs <br /> Commission luncheon event will be held at the 2030 Restaurant on <br /> November 18 at 1 :15pm. There will be a choice of three entrees, beverage, <br /> and dessert for $15.00 per person. Redwood City Police Chief Carlos <br /> Bolanos has agreed to speak. Chairperson Walsh will approach churches as <br /> he did on the first event and he encouraged each Commissioner to personally <br /> approach others to increase attendance. The restaurant will accommodate <br /> up to 50 people. <br /> -Commissioner Newell reported that he is attending an excellent daily <br /> exercise program at Red Morton Community Center at 6:30am and felt it <br /> should be promoted to the senior community. He also expressed his concern <br /> over the death of two seniors in a traffic crosswalk near Selby Lane; he <br /> shared flyers on a free talk about cancer of the prostrate; and announced the <br /> Mid-Peninsula Home Care and Hospice Breakfast "Kitchen Table Wisdom" on <br /> Thursday, October 23 at 7:30am at Rickey's Hyatt in Palo Alto. <br />
