Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, December 9, 1999 <br /> Commissioner Walsh, Commission members agreed to contact individual <br /> Council Members as follows to determine their ideas regarding the luncheons <br /> and their ability to support bringing in new people or ideas for speakers: <br /> Honey Carpe - Barbara Pierce; Jean Harrison - Ira Ruskin; Janet Borgens - <br /> Dick Claire; Leo Walsh - Jeff Ira; Marie Walsh - Colleen Jordan; Carolyn <br /> Nobles - Jim Hartnett; and Betty Moran - Diane Howard. No future <br /> luncheon date was set. Suggestions for future speakers included: Dick <br /> Dodge of the Port Commission and Dave Irmer of Innisfree Properties the <br /> potential developer of the Cinema Project in Downtown Redwood City. The <br /> idea of moving from lunch to an early dinner program and the possible <br /> expansion of the program to restaurants outside of the Downtown area were <br /> mentioned. <br /> -Housing, Transportation and Employment <br /> Commissioner Borgens reported on new rules that allow a doctor to require a <br /> patient to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a review of license. <br /> She saw it as positive since this was oftentimes difficult for other family <br /> members to accomplish. <br /> Commissioner Borgens also spoke to the impact on seniors of the high cost <br /> of rental housing and the long waiting list for federal subsidy programs. <br /> -Outreach, Public Awareness <br /> Commissioner Leo Walsh asked the Commission to write a letter asking the <br /> Governor to reconsider AB 1160 which was passed by the Assembly and <br /> Senate but vetoed by the Governor. A copy of the bill summary was <br /> distributed to the Commission. The bill speaks to requirements for training <br /> for direct care givers in nursing homes, medi care fraud and the cost of this <br /> type of training. <br /> MSA J.Borgens/J. Harrison to ask Commissioner Walsh to draft a letter to <br /> the Governor with a copy to Assemblyman Shelley for the Chairperson's <br /> signature. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> ITEM 1 - BRAINSTORMING SESSION ON IDEAS FOR STRATEGIC <br /> PLANNING COMMITTEE <br /> The Commissioners have appointed Commissioner Borgens as their <br /> representative to the Department Strategic Plan Committee. The following <br /> ideas were put forward: <br /> • More cultural and entertainment events for seniors within their means i.e. <br /> affordable, including free concerts in the summer and activities at the Fox <br /> Theater. <br /> • Covered swimming pool for senior and other use <br /> • Encourage continuing education classes <br /> • Re do Senior Annex for classes etc. current building inadequate <br /> • Consider that the largest group of seniors is fast approaching and current <br /> seniors need help to stay independent. <br /> • Consider expansion of senior transportation by Redwood City. <br /> • Continue senior programming at the Fair Oaks Senior Center <br /> • Consider apartments above retail in future planning. <br /> • General information help for seniors and their families at City Hall and <br /> Senior Centers to get them to existing resources <br /> • Nutrition information <br />
