Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,June 8, 2000 <br /> meeting with HMOs and doctors to try and negotiate a solution to this <br /> problem. The Commissioners discussed the concept of the meeting, who to <br /> invite, and the need to get direction on where to put their energies and how <br /> to take this matter to the next levels. Superintendent Centeno offered <br /> several options that the Commissioners could pursue. <br /> M/S L.Walsh/Carpe: To ask Mayor Ruskin to host a roundtable meeting <br /> sponsored by the Commission in order to discuss senior health care issues <br /> with elected officials and representatives to come up with a resolution to this <br /> issue. <br /> Superintendent Centeno said this matter would have to be presented as a <br /> Council report at a July Council meeting. Commissioner L.Walsh agreed to <br /> contact the Mayor. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> ITEM 3 — POSITION ON PROPOSED BALLOT MEASURE TO CHANGE THE <br /> REQUIREMENT FOR PASSAGE OF BONDS FROM 2/3 TO 50% <br /> Superintendent Centeno reported that she has spoken to Dr. Ron Crates of <br /> the Redwood City School District who explained that the Board was not <br /> considering additional bond measures at this time. Commissioner L.Walsh <br /> spoke about former bond measures and his concern regarding changing the <br /> requirement for passage from 2/3 to 50%. <br /> ITEM 4 — WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Housing, Transportation, Employment <br /> Superintendent Centeno announced a meeting on June 21 at 7:00pm with <br /> the neighbors of Stafford Park to hear concerns including traffic issues. <br /> -Outreach, Public Awareness <br /> Chairperson Moran thanked Commissioner Nobles for her work on organizing <br /> the elder abuse forum which was attended by more than 35 people. <br /> Chairperson Moran commented on a recent newscast regarding elder abuse <br /> in nursing homes. Commissioner Borgens noted that the TIES line <br /> representative was not as effective in their presentation at the Police <br /> spokesperson. She raised the issue of whether or not using the word "elder" <br /> was a negative that kept people away. <br /> -Economic Development Luncheon <br /> The Commissioners discussed the luncheon program and the difficulty <br /> getting a good crowd. Commissioner L.Walsh will call people who have not <br /> been attending. He asked that the current data base be checked for <br /> Commission members and if they are not included that a list be sent to him. <br /> Steve Penna of the Almanac did not appear at the June 2 luncheon. It was <br /> requested that each Commissioner review the mailing list and see who <br /> should be added. Suggestions for additions included: Senior Sentinel, <br /> Veterans Memorial Senior Center Advisory Board. <br />
