Senior Affairs Commission Page 3 <br /> Minutes of Thursday,November 14,2002 <br /> -Public Awareness &Access to Services <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh suggested the Senior Affairs Commission send a <br /> letter of congratulations to Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi on his <br /> election to office. <br /> M/S Graf/Carpe: For Commissioner Leo Walsh to send a <br /> congratulatory letter to Mr. Garamendi on behalf of the Senior Affairs <br /> Commission. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> -Strategic Planning Committee Update <br /> No report this month. <br /> Item 5 — Program Updates <br /> -Fair Oaks Senior Center <br /> Zena Vigileo reported that two new classes are being offered at the Center; <br /> Office Technology trains the older worker to re-enter work force and a <br /> Spanish language class is now offered once a week. A jewelry sale, with <br /> proceeds to benefit FOSC, and a Thanksgiving celebration will be held on <br /> November 21, 2002. The hour-time computer lab is open. The cost is $1.00 <br /> per session for tutoring. The Senior Employment portion of the Center has <br /> moved to Burlingame to better serve the entire county with more counselors <br /> and a senior specialist. Parking remains a problem at FOSC. A proposal to <br /> reconfigure current lot was too expensive for too little improvement. Public <br /> Works Department will be contacted to see if 5 or 6 more spaces can be <br /> reconstructed. The County cars parked there for the neighboring Human <br /> Resource Center have increased. They have agreed to move them to a <br /> different safe area if such a spot can be found. Costco allows parking at their <br /> facility when the Center has special events. <br /> -Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br /> Manager Griffith reported the six people have signed up for van rides to <br /> Kaiser medical appointments. Press releases and further publicity will <br /> hopefully increase use of this service. Over 300 people received flu shots at <br /> the Center. The VMSC Advisory Council kicked off the Holiday Giving Tree <br /> project with a donation of $500.00. Donations will provide gift bags to <br /> homebound seniors. Thanksgiving celebration will have 155 in attendance. <br /> Kaiser may be starting depression counseling groups at the Center in the <br /> near future. Sign ups are being taken for reservations for the Thanksgiving <br /> Day meal at the Center provided by the Peninsula Hills Women's Club. On <br /> Wednesday, December 4, 2002, the Center will celebrate its 20th Anniversary <br /> with a Gala from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. All are invited to attend. <br /> ANNOUNCEMENTS <br /> - Yelena Devyatova announced a Charles Dickens Christmas Carol lecture <br /> and continental breakfast on Saturday, November 23, 2002, at 9:30 a.m. <br />
