<br /> REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL
<br /> MAY 4 , 1936

<br /> Upon roll call , the following Councilmen were present : Mayor , Paul A. McCarthy , L. C.
<br /> Christensen , J . M . Eva, E . A. Pletcher , Wm. Rohn , R. N. Jones , G. W. McNulty and
<br /> City Clerk, B. E . Myers . Absent : None .
<br /> The minutes of the meetings of April 20 and April 27 , 1936 , were approved on motion of
<br /> Councilman Christensen , seconded by Councilman Rohn.
<br /> H. E . Conner , as contractor , asked permission to construct a sanitary sewer system for
<br /> Carmelita Manor , entering into private contract with the property owners therein ,
<br /> in conformity to plans and specifications prepared therefor by the City Engineer of
<br /> Redwood City , and work to be executed under the supervision of said City Engineer .
<br /> Permission was granted on motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Fletcher.
<br /> Because of the parallel parking on Main Street required by the State Highway Commission ,
<br /> considerable objection was raised by the property owners and merchants along Main
<br /> Street and a delegation was present at this meeting to protest . The discussion was
<br /> started by C. G. Lambert , followed by Mrs . Ross Blake , D . P. Flynn, Thos. Trite ,
<br /> F. J. Furnivall and others . It was claimed that the parallel parking greatly decreased
<br /> the amount of business because of the difficulty of parking and the lack of space .
<br /> The discussion brought out that it would be necessary, in order to satisfy the property
<br /> owners , either to get diagonal parking or have Main Street withdrawn from the State
<br /> Highway system. . It was suggested , therefore , that a committee of Councilmen and
<br /> citizens take up the matter with the Highway Commission in an endeavor to work out a
<br /> solution. Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman McNulty , moved that the Mayor
<br /> appoint a committee for this purpose , and Mayor McCarthy appointed the following to
<br /> work with the City Manager and City Engineer : Councilmen G. W. McNulty , Chairman.
<br /> R. N. Jones , L . C . Christensen , and D. P. Flynn , Thos. Trite , August Fromm , Sr. ,
<br /> C. G. Lambert , H. A. Beeger and Mrs . Ross Blake . In connection with this discussion ,
<br /> W. D. Ryan insisted that the parking time limit be rigidly enforced and he was assured
<br /> that the Police Department would take care of this and that parking spaces would also
<br /> be designated.
<br /> S . Reinhard , of Reinhard & Company , asked permission to erect in front of his store a
<br /> standard to bear a neon lighted clock. At the suggestion of Councilman Fletcher , he
<br /> was asked to submit at the next meeting a diagram or sketch of the clock "showing the
<br /> proposed installation in order that it might be submitted to the City Manager and
<br /> Building Inspector.
<br /> Several automobile dealers attended for the discussion concerning "l sed car" lots and
<br /> George W. Paulsen , representing George S . Paddleford , Inc. , appeared as requested.
<br /> Several 'anew car" dealers also were present and entered into the discussion. Hnwever ,
<br /> on motion of Councilman Fletcher , seconded by Councilman McNulty , it was decided to
<br /> lay the matter over again for two weeks in order that the City Attorney might be
