291 <br /> MINUTES OP REGULAR MATTING <br /> aoWCOD CITY COUNCIL <br /> MAY 3 , 1937 <br /> g : OO P . M . <br /> Upon roll call , the following Councilmen were present : Mayor Paul A. McCarthy , L . C . Chris- <br /> tensen , J . M . Eva, E. A. Fletcher , R, N. Jones , G . W. McNulty , and City Clerk , B. E. <br /> Myers . Absent : None . <br /> The minutes of the meeting of April 19 and adjourned meeting of April 26 , 1937 , were approved <br /> on motion of Councilman Christensen , seconded by Councilman Hohn. <br /> The City Attorney presented a letter from Ernest A. Wilson , Attorney of San Mateo , concerning <br /> proposed ordinance to be drawn by Mr. Wilson in which there would be set up franchise <br /> taxes applying to public utilities . Objection was made to paying outside attorneys <br /> when the City Attorney was qualified to do the same work satisfactorily. Finally , on <br /> motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman McNulty , the City Attorney was instructed <br /> to frame a franchise ordinance . <br /> The City Manager presented communication including a letter from C. G. Uhlenberg , Clerk of <br /> the Redwood City Grammar School District , in which the Grammar School Trustees suggested <br /> that the City buy the Central School Building at a price of $g5 , 000 , and make the building <br /> over into a City Hall . The Manager indicated that the total cost including alterations , <br /> etc . , would be approximately $105 ,000 . He showed that there would be a possibility of <br /> getting a P . W. A . Grant for a new City Hall which might in that event cost the City about <br /> $44 ,000 . 00 . No action was taken other than asking Councilmen Eva and Christensen to <br /> investigate end make further report . <br /> At a previous meeting there was presented a letter by the City Manager to the Planning <br /> Commission in which he outlined the probable cost of extending Stambaugh Street to <br /> Jefferson Avenue , The Planning Commission considered the project worthy of consideration <br /> and so informed the Council . The matter was taken up at this meeting. On motion of <br /> Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Jones , the Mayor was asked to appoint a committee <br /> to work with the Eastside Improvement Association to ascertain what , if anything , could <br /> be done. The Mayor appointed Councilmen Hohn and McNulty, <br /> Roscoe Wyatt , of the Chamber of Commerce appeared and presented the following letter concerning <br /> the proposed Harbor celebration. <br /> Gentlemen: <br /> Reference is made to the request of the City that the <br /> Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce make a recommenda- <br /> tion as to the use of City advertising funds in furthering the <br /> proposed Harbor Opening Celebration , including a Pageant . <br /> It is the consensus of opinion of the Directors that , <br /> since the movement has already been launched with considerable <br /> publicity , and if the City Council is convinced that it is the <br /> desire of the community to celebrate the opening of the Port in <br /> the manner proposed, but not yet fully planned, the City would <br /> be justified in acting favorably on a contribution toward its <br /> promotion , not to exceed $1 , 000 . 00 , and contingent upon a like <br /> contribution being made by the County of San Mateo , and suffi- <br /> cient further contributions being made to assure the financial <br /> success of the event . <br />
