Discussion was entered into concerning
what disposition should be made of further funds to be received during this tax time and
any surplus over the amount that the Bank of America was willing to receive, ( the First
National Bank having refused to accept any money sometime before) . The general financial
situation seemed to indicate that none of the surrounding banks of the community would be
willing to accept any of the money under the terms that were laid down with the state law ;
that is , 110% collateral security and a payment of a 2% interest on the average daily bal-
ance . It was decided , finally, on motion of Councilman McCarthy , seconded by Councilman
Eva, that a committee consisting of the Mayor, City Attorney and. Treasurer be authorized to
consult local bankers and San Francisco investment institutions to help in the selection of
proper Federal bonds which it was decided to purchase up to $50 ,000 .
P . A. Ryan , Chairman of the Retail Division of the Chamber of Commerce , asked the city to donate
$200 toward the expense of the Christmas decoration of the streets . After some discussion ,
it was decided, on motion of Councilman Fletcher , seconded by Councilman McNulty , to con-
tribute $75 for this purpose , Councilmen Eva and Lambert voting "No" .
C . B . Mish of 1144 Madison Avenue requested information of the Council as to the payment of
taxes . He was assured that in no case would the Tax Department accept a duplication of
taxes .
At this time , proposed ordinance licensing gas fitters and gas appliance dealers came un for adop-
tion. A. Hibnes for the Sequoia Sheet Metal Works spoke about having furnace men included.
C . E . Choate and P . E. Brand also spoke on the subject of this proposed ordinance . As there
seemed to be considerable dissatisfaction and some uncertainty about the provisions of the
ordinance , it was decided , on motion of Councilman Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Eva,
to lay the matter over until the next meeting.
Ordinance No . 353Sgranting permission to the City and County of San Francisco to construct and
maintain water conduits across certain Redwood City streets was formally passed and adopted,
on motion of Councilman McNulty , seconded by Councilman Fletcher , by unanimous vote .
On motion of Councilman McNulty , seconded by Councilman Eva , it was decided to make a contri-
bution of $50 toward the local Red Cross fund .
Councilman Jones spoke about excessive speed of automobiles on the Woodside Road and asked if
something could be done about it .
