C:n <br /> 52 <br /> MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING <br /> REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL <br /> DECEMBER 18 , 1933 <br /> 8 : 00 F . M . <br /> Upon roll call , the following Councilmen were present : Mayor , W . J. Dusel , R. N . Jones , C . . G . <br /> Lambert , Paul A. McCarthy , Geo . W. McNulty . City Clerk, B . E . Myers . Absent : Councilmen , <br /> H. A. Beeger and C . J . Hildebrant . <br /> The minutes of the meeting of December 4 were approved on motion of Councilman Lambert , seconded <br /> by Councilman Jones . <br /> I . N . Gaines of 133 Birch Street , East Palo Alto , asked for special rates for dances to be held <br /> each Saturday at the Foresters ' Hall up to one a. m. It was finally agreed to make a charge <br /> of $12 . 50 a month for dances each Saturday night and $20 . 00 a month if dances were also held <br /> on each Wednesday night . <br /> L . E . Werder appeared before the Council to ask its endorsement of a Government Housing Project <br /> on which he was working , consisting of 391 homes to be erected on the Horgan Ranch on the <br /> Woodside Road adjacent to Redwood City , pursuant to the provisions of the National Industrial <br /> Recovery Act , said houses to be built by the San Francisco Peninsula Housing Company . On <br /> motion of Councilman McCarthy , seconded by Councilman Jones , the Council endorsed the pro- <br /> ject as being one socially desirable and of such a nature as to be encouraged and apr;roved. <br /> j In a written communication , the City Manager called attention to the complications incidental <br /> to enforcing the ordinance affecting the : sale of Christmas trees . The discussion which <br /> followed emphasized that the local merchants should be protected and helped where possible . <br /> It was finally decided that no one should sell Christmas trees but dealers or those with <br /> whom they may arrange , with the understanding that the trees may be displayed for sale on <br /> nearby premises but the actual sale should be made on the business premises of the dealer .- <br /> In a written communication , the City Manager described the difficulty experienced by the City <br /> Collector in collecting business licenses and personal property taxes . On motion of Council- <br /> man McCarthy , seconded by Councilman McNulty , his recommendation was received and the Mayor <br /> instructed to appoint a committee to assist the City Collector in adjusting the difficult <br /> situations . Mayor Dusel named on his committee , Councilmen Lambert and Beeger and City <br /> Manager E . A. Rolison , with the understanding that the Mayor would also serve . <br /> C . G. Uhlenberg , special City Auditor , filed a letter covering partial audit indicating that the <br /> City records were all in due form and had been properly checked . <br /> Applications for State Liquor Licenses , on motion of Councilman McNulty , seconded by Councilman <br /> Jones , were referred to the committee . <br /> The Council went on record as approving the Central Valley Water Project , recommending that the <br /> citizens of Redwood City vote "Yes " . <br /> The resolution on State Highways and correspondence from Col . Skeggs were referred to the <br /> Attorney and City Manager . <br /> On motion of Councilman McCarthy , seconded by Councilman McNulty , the Council appropriated $250 . 00 <br /> to be devoted toward the payment of Christmas baskets for the needy of Redwood City , as re- <br /> quested by Z . T . Thorning. <br />
