  <br />Beekeeping in Redwood City    <br />  <br />Why is beekeeping important?   <br />Bees play a critical role in our environment and economy with roughly one­third of our food supply directly  <br />pollinated by bees. The use of pesticides and herbicides, and the increase in prevalence of disease, parasites,  <br />and other maladies have decimated bee populations, including in San Mateo County.   <br />  <br />How does beekeeping in Redwood City compare to other similar cities?   <br />Neighboring cities such as Menlo Park, Atherton, Belmont, and East Palo Alto have much more progressive  <br />policies in place. Redwood City has an ordinance that restricts backyard beekeeping for a large number of  <br />residents. Many residents would like to beekeep to promote local pollinators and are currently unable to do so  <br />on their own properties. A comparison table is provided on the next page.   <br />  <br />What can be done in Redwood City?   <br />●Update the ordinance to ensure that residents are able to support local pollinators.   <br />●Enable residents to be able to enjoy a passionate pastime.   <br />●Adopt a progressive beekeeping policy, which will inspire other cities to follow.   <br />●Educate the community about the benefits of beekeeping.   <br />  <br />Our Recommendation   <br />We believe that the current ordinance can be mildly adjusted to allow reasonable beekeeping in the city,  <br />similar to our neighboring cities.   <br />  <br />=  <br />   <br />1  <br />6. <br />4 <br />. <br />A <br />. <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />P <br />a <br />g <br />e <br /> <br />1 <br />2 <br />
