Page 3 <br /> <br />attended the Complete Streets meeting and the Silicon Valley Bike Coalition. He also attended the <br />Master Gardeners program at the community garden. Bruce Utecht coordinated the efforts of the <br />Master Gardeners, the Girl Scouts, and City Trees to create the wonderful garden. <br /> <br />Commissioner Britschgi attended the Council meeting that unanimously approved the 1% public art <br />revenue. She also attended the Architectural Review Committee meeting and learned that the El <br />Camino apartments are be built according to the Precise Plan which provided better understanding. She <br />reminded the Commission to think about plans for the sesquicentennial. <br /> <br />Commissioner Paley attended the Downtown Business Group meeting. They would like to increase the <br />retail presence on Main St. Lights are being placed in all the trees downtown. Commissioner Paley is <br />now one to the producers of Art on the Square. San Mateo County History Museum is partnering with <br />Art on the Square for a holiday show on November 19 th inside the museum. Box is one of the sponsors <br />of the event. Commissioner Paley reported that Chase the Chill is proceeding. Parks and Recreation will <br />print the tags, in English & Spanish, for each scarf that will be available for the taking on the Square, Red <br />Morton Park and the Fair Oaks area. <br /> <br />Commissioner Jones reported that the Open House was a success. Seniors have been enjoying the <br />garden this summer. Exercise classes are continuing as are low cost meals and glucose and cholesterol <br />screenings. Birthdays are celebrated once each month. Special events are planned for all the holidays. <br /> <br />Laura Swartzel reported that Fair Oaks Adult Activity Center in partnership with Redwood City, she is <br />using the VMSC van to transport Fair Oaks seniors to the farmers market, with $20 coupons provided by <br />the county to encourage them to eat fresh and healthy. Another field trip is planned to Whole Foods for <br />a free tour, breakfast and presentation by their nutritionist about how to shop inexpensively there. <br /> <br />Chair Draeger reported that every Thursday, Friday and Saturday there is a downtown police street unit <br />on foot, bicycles as well as by cars. Commissioner Paley reported that a downtown police substation will <br />also be opening. Chair Draeger stated that the RCPD is increasing assistance to the homeless and <br />helping to find them services and homes. The Redwood City Police Department is concerned about <br />safety for everyone, including the homeless. Commissioner Paley will contact the Police Department <br />about the Chase the Chill project and to share information. Vice Chair Cooperman recommended <br />updating the Help for the Homeless handouts. The pamphlets can then be given to the Police for <br />distribution to people that may benefit from the information. Bruce will check the handouts and <br />recommends adding ‘211’ to them. <br /> <br />Announcements <br /> <br />• The Friends of the VMSC will have a fundraiser dinner and concert with Rick Stevens on <br />September 10th to support the lunch and nutrition program at the center. Thanks to Vice Chair <br />Cooperman for spearheading that event. <br />• The new San Mateo County Sheriff is Carlos Bolanos, who previously was Under Sheriff and <br />Redwood City’s Chief of Police. <br />• The VMSC hosts a fundraiser for Fisher House on August 27, 2016.
