Page 3 <br /> <br />Commissioner Britschgi reported the Senior Affairs Commission’s part of the Sesquicentennial events is <br />to plan a picnic. She suggested the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, Fair Oaks and Redwood Shores <br />joining to enjoy a meal and the festivities together. There is time for more ideas and suggestions before <br />a decision is made. <br /> <br />Commissioner James has been reading the Redwood City strategic plan. He attended a Planning <br />Commission meeting with the Inner Harbor Plan and the EIR draft for the California Way water tank <br />proposed capacity increase. He also attended the Council retreat. Warren Dale made a presentation on <br />‘World Cafés’, now known as ‘Conversations With’. Another presenter discussed communication styles <br />among Council members. He is seeking an email disclaimer from the City for their protection. <br /> <br />Commissioner Paley reported that Art on the Square has completed their summer season. Their next <br />event will be November 19th in the History Museum. Donations of scarves will be collected in October <br />for ‘Chase the Chill’ and distributed in November in various locations around the City. Parks & <br />Recreation has assisted by printing tags for the scarves in English and Spanish saying, ‘If you want me, <br />take me. If you need me, take me.’ She has met with many groups and organizations to promote the <br />project. <br /> <br />Commissioner Jones reported that Fair Oaks had field trips to the farmers’ market and Whole Foods in <br />the summer to promote nutrition and healthy eating. She also stated that Fair Oaks has stress <br />management classes, yoga classes, sit and fit classes, soul line dancing, tai chi and gardening. <br />Laura Swartzel reported that the Humane Society at Fair Oaks on September 14th to teach the difference <br />between service dogs and therapy dogs so patrons understand why dogs are sometimes allowed in the <br />center. She introduced Theodora Singer, one of the first navigators for 70 Strong, a program at Fair <br />Oaks that connects seniors with services and programs within the Sequoia Healthcare District. <br /> <br />Announcements <br />• Sunday, 9/11 Commemorative event starting at 5:47 am with Police, fire, the red cross in <br />attendance <br />• Sunday, 9/11 Interfaith Walk for Peace at 9:00 a.m. from Palo Alto to Mitchell Park <br />• Unsung Hero luncheon on October 1st at the VMSC hosted by the Inter Service Club <br />• Patter Hatfield introduced himself as the host of drum circles after events on the Square and at <br />Redwood City activities for several years.
