REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

November 7, 2016
SUBJECT
Accept Offer to Create Sesquicentennial Dedication Plaque and Select Location for
Placement of the Plaque

RECOMMENDATION
Receive report and by motion accept offer from Native Sons of the Golden West to
create a Sesquicentennial dedication plaque and select location for placement of the
plaque

BACKGROUND
Redwood City will be turning 150 in 2017! This City’s Sesquicentennial will be
celebrated throughout the year. Planning efforts are well underway with the Council
appointed committee led by former Mayor Barbara Pierce and local historian and
community organizer, Dee Eva.
Highlights of the celebration include, reenactments; neighborhood events at local parks;
speakers series at the Library and other downtown venues; a major community event
on May 20th, 2017 that includes a Flower Extravaganza, art, car show, music, food,
competitions, and more; a film about Redwood City; the creation of a commemorative
magazine; a new website providing history and highlights; art and poster contests; 150th
theme for all special events held throughout the year; and much more.
The Native Sons of the Golden West service club has offered to create and place a
history plaque to celebrate and recognize the City’s Sesquicentennial. The
Sesquicentennial Committee recommends that the City accept this offer and that there
would be a dedication ceremony and placement of this official plaque. The Committee
would like input from the City Council regarding the suggestion for a location and what
the plaque should include.
ANALYSIS
The primary mission of the Native Sons of the Golden West is to preserve the spirit of
the “Days of 49” and the history of California. They do this in many ways, and one of
which is the creation and placement of history plaques on public facilities. The City of
Redwood City is fortunate that we have an active Native Sons of the Golden West and
the City has worked closely with the club on past dedications. This includes the old
Firehouse which is now the Main Library; and the recognition of the Redwood City Fire
Department’s 150th anniversary.
7.A. - Page 1
