Farmers Market
The idea of Atherton's
first Family Faire & Farm-
ers' Market, according to
Didi Fisher of Atherton
Now, "is to imagine what
this place might be if it
wasn't a parking lot."
Fisher was speaking of
the area neur Atherton's
historic Caltrain station,
which is an anchor corner
of the town's Civic Center
and undoubtedly the most
recently refurbished striae-
ture in the area.
The long -planned Farat-
By Faire & Farmers' Market
i5 meant to give Atherton
residents a closer look at the
decrepit old "temporary
structures that comprise the
town's administration offices,
permit and planning depart-
inents and police stomion.
And, to let residents see
what planners, guided by
the Civic Center Advisory
Committee and City Coun-
cil, envision as replacements
for the old facilities.
Part of that big parking
lot would be replaced by
conjoined, two-story build-
ings housing the town's
police, public works and
permits departments, and
administration offices. Be-
tween) those buildings and a
new library would be a large
courtyard area that could
be used for future Familv
Faires & Farmers Markets.
Plus, food :and fun are
planned for the event, which
is to take place on Sunday,
from noon till 3 p.m.
"It's very exciting," said
Fisher on Tuesday. "This
will kick off the community
phase of the futd-rtaising
campaign."
l
The need for new build -
in is obvious as visitors to
the event will he able to see
for themselves, The tempo-
rary buildings are decades
past their intended use,
and are patched together
in spots with old aluminum
street signs. The flooring
is creaky and does not in-
spire confidence. The police
department has one men's
room for the 20 men who
work there .Ind one for the
11 women employees. Also,
the buildings house rats.
But, while the town's
finances are actually in
pretty good shape, with con-
siderable financial reserves,
as City Manager George
Rodericks noted recentIv,
the residents of Atherton m
2012 voted for Measure L,
which decreed that most of
the funds to rebuild the cen-
ter must he donations.
Hence Atherton Now,
which was formed to seek
those donations.
The project
to replace city
buildings, the po-
lice department
and the Ather-
ton Library — is
expected to cost
$40 million or
more. S
The old li-
brary, which re-
eetves Property
tau Iimds from
than different chan-
nels an the town, already
lois the nwaucy to pay fol.
the $12 million to 15 minim
expected to be used for its
replacement, according to
Rodericks. And the town has
rnJliou setasideina build
ing fund, leaving roughly s2
million more that needs t
be raised by donations.
Atherton Now has gath
erect almost $6 million
said Fisher, hn•gely than
to donations of $1 million
