Section 3.0— Project Description
As shown on Figure 2.2-3, the proposed classroom building location currently consists of a paved
area, landscaping including trees and small shrubs, and an outdoor play area, which would all be
removed and/or relocated to accommodate the proposed classroom building.
An existing pump station is located immediately south of the proposed classroom building location.
The pump station is surrounded by a six-foot solid wood fence on all sides with a driveway onto the
cul-de-sac at the end of Egret Lane providing access. The pump station, including the surrounding
fence, would not be affected by the proposed project.
3.2.2 Kindergarten Classroom
The proposed one-story modular Kindergarten classroom would be located in line with the existing
classrooms buildings along the northeastern boundary of the project site (refer to Figure 3.2-1). The
classroom would be approximately 1,500 sf in size and would have a maximum height of
approximately 15 feet. The proposed location of the classroom currently contains the Kindergarten
play area, which would be relocated to accommodate the proposed classroom building.
The existing Kindergarten play area is an approximately 1,800 sf area covered with a rubberized play
surface and a play structure. The play area would be relocated onto the existing asphalt play area that
is located between the existing school buildings and the northern site boundary (refer to Figure 3.2-
1).
3.3.3 Other Additions, Improvements and Modifications
The proposed project includes other various additions and improvements to the project site, both on
the Sandpiper Community Center/Sandpiper Park property and the Sandpiper Elementary School
campus. The locations of the proposed additions and improvements are shown on Figure 3.2-1.
Additions to the community center and park include an outdoor seating and gathering area located
south of the existing Sandpiper Park play field and bike racks and a new public restroom that would
be approximately 500 sf in size and located adjacent to the proposed two-story school building.
Additionally, the outdoor play area adjacent the existing community center building would be
reconfigured to accommodate the proposed two-story classroom building, and the community center
parking lot would be expanded by six parking spaces. The reconfigured outdoor play area would be
the same size as the existing outdoor play area.
Improvements to the elementary school include modernizing the existing music/science building,
converting an existing classroom into a workroom and offices, and re -striping the northern asphalt
play area to include two basketball courts. The proposed project would also relocate the existing
trash enclosure away from the adjacent residences to the school parking lot, resulting in the net loss
of one parking space. The loss of the parking space in the school parking lot would offset by the six
additional parking spaces in the community center parking lot.
City of Redwood City 10 Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration
Sandpiper Elementary School Facilities Expansion November 2016
