6.3.A. - Page 2
The efforts of the Task Force resulted in the creation of the "Homes for All San Mateo
County Initiative," launched in September 2016. The initiative includes a regional action
plan to implement a variety of strategies aimed at producing and preserving housing at
all income levels. This plan includes key strategies and action items aimed at building
and developing affordable housing, transportation and connectivity to affordable
housing, securing land for affordable housing, and obtaining a permanent source of
funding for affordable housing.
This initiative includes a new housing policy resource center website that includes an
action plan, community calendar, interactive map and a tool kit with information about
different tools jurisdictions can consider when adopting local housing policies. The
initiative includes a community engagement campaign which includes marketing
materials, power point presentations, housing talking points and handouts to assist with
engaging with the community on affordable housing issues. The campaign also includes
trainings for staff, elected officials and the community on how to address emerging
housing issues and how to create and identify community ambassadors who will work
with the public on affordable housing issues. Additional information on the program is
available on the County website: http://homeforallsmc.com.
ANALYSIS
One of the Task Force goals is to have the county and all 20 cities and towns in San
Mateo County adopt resolutions in support of the Home of All San Mateo County
initiative. The City Council of Redwood City has identified affordable housing as one of
the City's top priorities. The Home for All San Mateo County Initiative provides an
opportunity for the City to collaborate with other San Mateo County jurisdictions,
regional employers, educators, developers, and housing advocates to provide regional
housing solutions. The attached resolution commits the City to continue to work with
other jurisdictions in the County to address the housing crisis on a regional basis,
including through ongoing support of the Home for All San Mateo County Initiative. The
resolution does not specifically commit the City to support any specific policies,
programs or commit any financial resources beyond staff and elected official
participation in regional meetings.
ALTERNATIVES
Council could choose to take no action or to provide alternative direction.
FISCAL IMPACT
None
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW
This action is not a project as defined by the California Environmental Quality Act.
