MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST <br />la. Presentation from the people of Abidjan, West Africa. <br />Rosetta Johnson, Redwood City Public Information Officer, described her trip <br />to Abidjan, Ivory Coast and the plaque she presented on behalf of the <br />Council and the people of Redwood City; and, presented the Council with <br />gifts from the Mayor of Abidjan, including a bronze and stone friendship <br />statue, official Abidjan history and guide book and a bronze medallion. <br />Mayor Greenalch thanked Mrs. Johnson and advised the gifts would be on <br />display at the new main Library. <br />lb. Councilman Bury advised that the voluntary campaign limitation announced <br />by Vice Mayor La Berge, Mayor Greenalch and Councilman Claire at the Council <br />meeting of January 22, 1990 was not an official nor legislative action by <br />the Council. <br />lc. Councilman Murray reported on the actions of the Regional Planning <br />Commission describing the proposed distribution of FAU funds with the Maple <br />Street overcrossing placing 13th on the list, and the draft plan of the <br />ALUC. <br />ld. Mayor Greenalch described the 50th anniversary celebrations for the First <br />Christian Church. Vice Mayor LaBerge attended the community breakfast <br />and Mayor Greenalch attended the reunion dinner and presented Pastor Logie <br />with a proclamation honoring the faith and fellowship provided over the <br />years by the First Christian Church. <br />---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - -- <br />BOARD, COMMISSION AND COMMITTEE REPORTS <br />2. Drug Free Zones Task Force Report by Council <br />Committee Chairperson Buchan, Police Chief Guardino <br />and Sergeant Switzer <br />Report: Police Department, Sergeant Switzer 1/31/90 <br />Councilwoman Buchan presented the staff report and commended Police Chief <br />Guardino and Sergeant Switzer for their outstanding report which clearly and <br />definitively describes the Redwood City and New Jersey drug programs. <br />Sergeant Switzer described how Redwood City and the state of California has <br />been involved in drug education and special enforcement for twenty years and <br />New Jersey entered the field two years ago. Redwood City law enforcement <br />and the education community have a close working relationship and New Jersey <br />is just embarking on this course. The two areas in the New Jersey program <br />to be studied by California involve: Driver's license suspension for drug <br />conviction with a delayed imposition as the necessary component, and posting <br />signs around schools declaring a 1,000 foot perimeter as "Drug Free ". <br />MINUTE BOOK NO. 49 <br />Page No. 209 <br />Minutes <br />February 5, 1990 <br />Page 2 <br />
