BY ANIKA MARINAKIS
Daily News Columnist
Dear Miss Behavin’:I love Hal-
loween, and can’t wait to dress up
“Terry,” my newly adopted terrier
mix. I’m worried that making him
wear a costume will stress him out,
though. How can I get Terry into the
Halloween spirit?
Reply:It’s very thoughtful of you to
take Terry’s feelings into consideration
before getting him a costume. Since
dogs have so much personality, it’s
easy to think of them in human terms,
and it’s only natural that owners want
to dress up their pets. It also makes for
humorous photo opportunities to post
on social media. But how do dogs actu-
ally feel about wearing costumes?
Since we can’t ask dogs outright,
the best thing to do is turn to the pho-
tographic evidence. If you look across
hundreds of photos of dogs wearing
costumes, you’ll see that most dogs
aren’t enjoying the experience as
much as their human counterparts.
You might even see some dogs under
quite a bit of stress. A few stress sig-
nals in dogs include a closed mouth,
wrinkled brow, wide eyes, lip-licking,
yawning and flat ears.
The good news is, however, just
because your dog may not currently
enjoying wearing a costume, you
can still make the experience better
for him through training. To do this,
first find something your dog loves; a
favorite treat or toy usually does the
trick. Then pair that favorite goody
with the costume.For example, if
your dog loves hot dogs, chop one
into tiny pieces and dole them out
to your dog as you put part of the
costume on him. Start with the least
confining part of the costume, such as
a cape. Only leave the costume on for
a minute at first, and then gradually
build up to longer sessions.
If you show Terry that he gets
good stuff whenever you whip out his
costume, he will start to look forward
to wearing his festive outfit. Remem-
ber to keep the training sessions
short and sweet, a couple minutes
tops. If you repeat enough times
before Halloween, Terry should be
more than ready to celebrate in style.
For more information,visit www.PHS-
SPCA.org,call 650-340-7022,ext.374,
or e-mail amarinakis@phs-spca.org.
BELMONT
601 Ralston Ave.
(650)345-0800
NEW LOCATION!
NOTICE INVITING SEALED BIDS
CITY OF REDWOOD CITY
REDWOOD CITY,CALIFORNIA
Notice is hereby given that sealed bids will be received by the City of Redwood
City at the Office of the City Clerk,1017 Middlefield Road,Redwood City,
California up to 3:30 p.m.Wednesday,October 26th for the following bids
“Water and Sewer Utility System Supplies”
The Notice Inviting Bid packets may be obtained from the Public Works
Ser vices Depar tment,1400 Broadway Street,Redwood City,CA 94063,
online at http://www.redwoodcity.org/business/bids-proposals,or by calling
(650)780-7464.All proposals must be submitted by the specified time and
place and plainly marked on the envelope:“SEALED BID FOR WATER
AND SEWER UTILITY SYSTEM SUPPLIES DUE 3:30 P.M.WEDNESDAY,
OCTOBER 26TH”The Council of the City of Redwood City reser ves the
right to reject or accept any proposal or bid or any par t or por tion thereof or
any combination of bid items or bids, and fur ther reser ves the right to waive
any informality or honest clerical error in any bid.
Silvia Vonderlinden
City Clerk
Published in the Daily News on October 7,2016.
150 PALOALT ODAILYNEWS.COM THE DAILY N EWS FRIDAY,OCT.7,2016 21
Pet of the week
PETS
Critter Corner
How to get a dog to accept a costume
Justin Schlesinger /Peninsula Humane Society
Beemi is a small, neutered male rabbit with a short,
black coat.He is a very mellow and sweet bunny who
loves to spend time with his favorite person.Beemi is
comfortable being held and enjoys being petted. He
also likes to run and explore outside of his cage.Be sure
to speak with an adoption counselor.Ask for Beemi,ID#
A813687.Adoptable pets are available at the Peninsula
Humane Society &SPCA,To m and Annette Lantos
Center for Compassion,1450 Rollins Road,Burlingame.
The shelter is open for adoptions 11 a.m.to 7 p.m.
Mondays through Fridays,and 11 a.m.to 6 p.m.on
weekends.For directions and information,call 650-340-
7022 or visit www.phs-spca.org.6.1.D. - Page 34
