SCOPE OF WORK
A. Pruning and Removal
1. A basic crew shall consist of two (2) experienced climbers, one (1) ground worker, one (1)
aerial lift truck, 1 dumping chip box, and one brush chipper, and all other necessary tools
and equipment (i.e. chain saws, climbing lines and saddles, personal safety gear, rigging
lines, traffic control devices, etc.) to perform the required work. The Certified Arborist
required under paragraph 1.04 may be a regular member of this crew if so desired.
2. All materials generated by the work crews not suitable for firewood shall become the
property of the Contractor for proper disposal. Firewood-sized wood shall be stacked neatly
on-site for use by Redwood City residents. All State Quarantine regulations shall be followed
for wood disposal as required.
3. As a minimum, the Contractor shall provide one crew for the duration of the contract. Crews
will be routinely assigned to "block pruning" work, in which all street trees along a given block
are pruned in succession. However, the crew may be given other pruning or removal jobs at
various City locations as the need may arise. Additional crew members may be requested if
necessary, if more efficient, or for particular projects, only upon advanced approval by the
City. Additional crew will be paid at the pre-agreed established rates for their job
classification.
4. Additional crews shall be scheduled and report to work within fourteen calendar days after
notice from the City.
5. In general, the use of climbing spikes is not allowed on City trees except in the cases of tree
removals or certain eucalyptus species. Pruning paint or tree sealer shall not be used.
6. At the completion of pruning and removal work, the Contractor shall update the City's
computerized inventory information for the trees worked upon. If a tree is missing from the
list, the Contractor shall add the tree and site data. The contractor may, at the City's
discretion, enter the changes in a computer program or update the lists for the City to enter
the data later. The inventory data includes: location, species, planting site width, diameter,
condition, health, wires and utilities, sidewalk condition, and maintenance performed.
7. All tree pruning work shall be performed to International Society of Arboriculture Pruning
Guidelines and American National Standards Institute A-300 Pruning Standards. The City
will provide specific pruning instructions and desired guidelines.
8. Compensation for the above materials and work completed is included in bid item no. 1 of
the Bid Proposal.
B. Emergency services as needed
1. Contractor shall make available, when requested by an authorized City representative, an
emergency call-out crew consisting of at least two (2) fully qualified workers capable of
performing whatever work may be required, a dump truck, brush chipper, and all other
miscellaneous tools and equipment that may be necessary. This crew shall be available to
respond to emergency call outs within one hour. The City guarantees a minimum of two (2)
hours for each call out.
2. During either hazardous or more routine unanticipated emergencies, it is generally the City's
intent to correct the immediate problem in order to make the site safe for the public right-of-
way and to correct such obvious hazards to traffic, pedestrians and adjacent structures as
may be found.
