W •
 l

REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Ci Mana er
September 27, 2004
Subject
Final Acceptance - Redwood Shores Sewer Pump Stations #1 and #3 improvement
Project
Recommendation
Accept, by motion, the Redwood Shores Sewer Pump Stations #1 and #3 Improvement
Project, and authorize the release of bonds and retention.
Background
On October 13, 2003, the City Council accepted the bids and awarded the contract to
McGuire and Hester, Inc. of Oakland, California, for the Redwood Shores Sewer Pump
Stations #1 and #3 Improvement Project, in the amount of $629,250.00. The project
involved the rehabilitation of finro of the oldest sewer pump stations that the City
operates in Redwood Shores. The stations are located on Marine Parkway at Twin
Dolphin Drive and at Trident Drive and Bark Drive.
This rehabilitation brings both pump stations up to current technologies and industry
practices. The new pumps and controls that were installed comply with current City
standards, and parts will be interchangeable with other pump stations. The rehabilitated
stations eliminate the need for hazardous (confined space) maintenance activities
associated with the stations, prior to the improvements.
A total of three Change Orders were issued during the construction of the project: The
Change Orders were issued to resolve unforeseen situations, and totaled $34,216.36.
The Change Orders brought the final construction cost to $663,466.36 or 5.4% above
the original award amount.
If City Council accepts this project, staff will move forward to close out the project. The
material and performance bonds will be reduced as appropriate, and the retention
monies will be paid to the Contractor after 45 days from the filing of the Notice of
Completion, and assuring that there are no unpaid claims against the contract.
Alternatives
1. The alternative is to delay acceptance to address any concerns of the City Council.
