<br /> iA,1 <br /> REPORT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> 'From theCi Mana er <br /> October 11, 2004 <br /> Subject <br /> The proposed use of 2004 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) funds by the <br /> Redwood City Police Department. <br /> Recommendation <br /> After completion of the public hearing, approve the Police Chiefs recommendation to <br /> dedicate the funds to the procurement of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team <br /> equipment and Emergency Preparedness Training (EPT). <br /> Background <br /> The Omnibus Appropriations Act authorized the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance <br /> to make funds available to units of local government under the LLEBG program for the .. <br /> purposes of reducing crime and improving public safety. A public hearing must be held prior <br /> to the awarding of the grant. This is the ninth consecutive year the City of Redwood City will <br /> receive the grant. This year's award is $19,147. Funds must be used for one or more of the <br /> following seven proposed areas: <br /> · Law Enforcement Support: Hire, train additional officers, pay overtime to law <br /> enforcement officers, or procure equipment related to law enforcement functions. <br /> · Enhance security measures in and around schools or other facilities location <br /> considered a special risk for incidents of crime <br /> · Establish or support drug courts. <br /> · Enhance the adjudication of cases involving violent offenders, including cases <br /> involving violent juvenile offenders. <br /> · Establishing a multi-jurisdictional task force to work with federal law enforcement to <br /> prevent and control crime. <br /> · Establish crime prevention programs to control, detect, or investigate crime or the <br /> prosecution of criminals. <br /> · Defray the cost of indemnification insurance for law enforcement officers. <br /> It is the Police Chiefs recommendation that this year's award be dedicated to the <br /> procurement of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team equipment and <br /> Emergency Preparedness Training (EPT). <br /> --- --"......- <br />
