iA,1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council 'From theCi Mana er October 11, 2004 Subject The proposed use of 2004 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) funds by the Redwood City Police Department. Recommendation After completion of the public hearing, approve the Police Chiefs recommendation to dedicate the funds to the procurement of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team equipment and Emergency Preparedness Training (EPT). Background The Omnibus Appropriations Act authorized the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance to make funds available to units of local government under the LLEBG program for the .. purposes of reducing crime and improving public safety. A public hearing must be held prior to the awarding of the grant. This is the ninth consecutive year the City of Redwood City will receive the grant. This year's award is $19,147. Funds must be used for one or more of the following seven proposed areas: · Law Enforcement Support: Hire, train additional officers, pay overtime to law enforcement officers, or procure equipment related to law enforcement functions. · Enhance security measures in and around schools or other facilities location considered a special risk for incidents of crime · Establish or support drug courts. · Enhance the adjudication of cases involving violent offenders, including cases involving violent juvenile offenders. · Establishing a multi-jurisdictional task force to work with federal law enforcement to prevent and control crime. · Establish crime prevention programs to control, detect, or investigate crime or the prosecution of criminals. · Defray the cost of indemnification insurance for law enforcement officers. It is the Police Chiefs recommendation that this year's award be dedicated to the procurement of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team equipment and Emergency Preparedness Training (EPT). --- --"......-
