Page 3 <br /> <br />has been attending City Council meetings and working with adopt-a-highway. He reported that <br />Complete Streets is now an official commission and that Barbra Britschgi was honored by the Mayor at <br />the State of the City address. He also complimented Chair Draeger on his sermon at the slain officer’s <br />memorial. Chair Draeger thanked Commissioner James and reported that the police department has <br />been very supportive in helping the officer’s widow through this time. <br />Commissioner Cooperman reported that the March 6th City Council meeting made her happy and proud <br />to be part of the community. She stated that she really enjoyed her years serving on the Senior Affairs <br />Commission. She also served on the Library Commission for several years. She will be moving to <br />Colorado in May or June of this year. The commissioners thanked her for her service to the community <br />and wished her well in her new location. <br /> <br />ITEM 4 – Sesquicentennial Update <br />Commissioner Britschgi reported that there is a celebration at Mezes Park on March 25th. The Flower <br />Extravaganza is on May 20th. There are many events celebrating Redwood City’s 150th anniversary. They <br />include Art on the Square, Bouquets to Art at the Fox, Photography, fashion show and children’s events <br />at the History Museum, Redwood City Then & Now - a photographic collaboration by Parks & Recreation <br />and the Library. <br /> <br />ITEM 5 – Housing Update <br />This item was postponed to a later date. <br /> <br />Staff Update <br />Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br />Bruce reported that he met with Carrie of the Daily Journal and Nicole Fernandez of San Mateo County <br />regarding a partnership for Seniors on the Square in June about Elder Abuse Awareness. <br />Tippy Irwin of the Ombudsman is retiring on May 31st. Her replacement is Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Millet. <br />As of March 1st, after 32 years, bingo has been cancelled at the VMSC. There will be no more <br />Wednesday evening or Sunday bingo. <br />The VMSC will be open from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sundays for Pickle Ball. <br />There is discussion about offering Bunko, a dice game, quarterly downtown on the Courthouse Square <br />under a tent. The first one will be a fundraiser for the Magical Bridge Playground in Red Morton Park. <br />The next one may be a fundraiser for the senior lunch program. <br />The Friends of the VMSC is sponsoring a ‘Speak Easy’ at the center on April 29th. <br />Master Gardeners now have an office in the main building. They offer free plant advice to anyone <br />stopping by with gardening questions. <br />Bruce stated that Parks and Recreation conference, there was discussion about bringing agriculture into <br />classrooms. Bruce referred to the program as ‘Vege-cation’ and adapted it for seniors. Seniors could be <br />sent home with carrots, parsley and a recipe, asked to prepare a dish and report on it. Vice Chair Paley <br />suggested contacting Yummly, a Redwood City based company offering online recipes and food <br />preparation applications. <br /> <br />The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at 2:35 p.m. The next meeting will <br />be on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center in Redwood City, <br />California.
