REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

June 26, 2017

SUBJECT
Civic Cultural Commission's Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Funding Recommendations for Large
Grants

RECOMMENDATION
Approve, by motion, Civic Cultural Commission's Proposed Funding Agreements for
Large Grants for FY 2017-2018 as delineated in Attachment A

BACKGROUND
The City Civic Cultural Commission (CCC), on behalf of the City Council, works to
support and enhance cultural life in Redwood City. The CCC accomplishes this goal by
soliciting and recommending the issuance of grants to community non-profit organizations
that support art and cultural activities. Funding for the grants is authorized during the
annual budget process. For Fiscal Year 2017-2018, a total of $58,896 is available for
large grants (i.e. grants over $1,000), small grants (under $1,000), and Commission-
sponsored events. In March 2005, the CCC adopted a Strategic Plan which identified
the following priority areas for financial support:

· Development of Downtown as the City’s cultural center;
· Arts programs at both the elementary and secondary school levels;
· Community-building events that celebrate the diversity of our community and
support local arts organizations;
· Programs that focus on a senior audience;
· Increased investment in public art;
· Alternative funding sources for the arts

ANALYSIS
On June 1, 2017, the Civic Cultural Commission met to consider large grant funding
recommendations for Fiscal Year 2017-2018. The Commission discussed the Grant
Applications and recommended allocating $41,500 of its total budget for large grants. In
sum, twenty-one local non-profit cultural and arts organizations submitted large grant
requests totaling $91,712.

6.1.C. - Page 1
