El Camino Real Traffic u,gnal System City of Redwood City
The spectrum analyzer is an electronic test equipment with a visual display output
similar to that of an oscilloscope. The display shows radio-frequency power level as
a function of frequency.
Potential interference to radio receivers, both in-band and out-band interferences, will
be invesdgated. Future use of spread spectrum radios in the area will be projected and
an evaluation of potential interference will be made.
Terrestrial microwave links have been in use for some time primarily as a data and
voice communications trunk between offices and/or remote work centers. In some
cases, microwave links communicate with traffic signal controllers or transmit video
information.
Microwave signals radiate through the atmosphere along a 1ine-of-sight path between
the transmitting and receiving antennas. A detailed comparison will be made between
radio and microwave for their applicability and reliability for this project. Table 2 is
a sample characteristics of these two wireless technologies that MMA employees for
the feasibility study for the City of Petaluma, California, and numerous other projects
throughout California. Similar characteristics, applicable to this corridor will be
developed and analyzed for this project.
. Central System Network - Communication links to potential users such as the involved Cities
and Caltram is potentially required. It is envisioned that the central system at Caltrans need to
connect to field masters. Work stations may be located at City Hall's via telephone connection
to the central system.
TASK 2: CONCEPT DESIGN
A conceptual master plan of communication will be prepared. The master plan will clearly identify the
communication media proposed for each interconnect link between each of the study signalized intersection
and recommendations related to communication links between field masters and central traffic control system,
as appropriate. Any hardwire interconnect, will be the repeater locations or other key features of the
masterplan.
The master plan will be prepared based on a through review of existing conditions and alternatives analysis
in terms of technology as well as costs and maintenance involved. Several alternatives will be developed as
part of conceptual plan study and a workshop will be presented to agency staff to discuss and reach consensus.
TASK 3: MODIFY CALTRANS DOCUMENTATION
The original Project Study Report (PSR) and Project Report (PR) for the El Camino Real Interconnect Project
was prepared by Caltrans. These documents will be updated to reflect the change in the project limits and
design. The revisions are elimination of the Woodside Road intersections, increasing the number of
intersections on El Camino Real and changing the technology to be used to interconnect the traffic signals.
It is possible that these changes can be accommodated through an addendum to the existing PSR and PRo The
project should remain Categorically Exempt under CEQA and no other changes to the project are anticipated.
Meyer, Mohaddes Associates, Inc.
28
'i
