12 FRIDAY, FEB. 24, 2017 THE DAILY NEWS PALOALTODAI LYN EWS.COM 150 <br />Feds delay funding, potentially derailing electric <br />BY KATY MURPHY <br />AND JASON GREEN <br />Bay Area News Group <br />In a major blow to a 15 - <br />year -long effort to modern- <br />ize Caltrain, federal transit <br />officials on Feb. 17 said they <br />are withholding $647 million <br />the agency was counting on <br />this month to start work on <br />a project to electrify the train <br />line between San Francisco <br />and San Jose. <br />The decision by the Fed- <br />eral Transit Administra- <br />tion comes just weeks after <br />California's Republicans in <br />Congress asked the Trump <br />administration to block the <br />funds in an effort to halt one <br />of California's most contro- <br />versial public works proj- <br />ects: high-speed rail. <br />In a letter to the board <br />that runs Caltrain, the FTA <br />said it needed "additional <br />time to complete review <br />of this significant commit- <br />ment of Federal resources," <br />and would make a final deci- <br />sion after President Donald <br />Trump releases his bud- <br />get for the 2018 fiscal year, <br />which starts on Oct. 1. <br />Caltrain officials say the <br />delay could have dire con- <br />sequences for the $2 bil- <br />lion electrification project <br />as they needed the fund - <br />NOTICE INVITING SEALED BIDS <br />CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br />REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA <br />ing by March 1. It's only a flesh <br />wound to high-speed rail, <br />but it could be a mortal <br />wound in our efforts to elec- <br />trify Caltrain." <br />Police subdue armed <br />man with death wish <br />A suicidal man advanced <br />at police while wielding a 10 - <br />inch knife, asking that they <br />kill him, but deputies were <br />able to defuse the situation, <br />according to the San Mateo <br />County Sheriff's Office. <br />Just before 8 p.m. Feb. <br />17, sheriffs deputies re- <br />sponded to the 400 block <br />of Beresford Avenue in un- <br />incorporated San Mateo <br />County near Redwood City <br />on a report that a man had <br />not taken his psychiatric <br />medication and was threat- <br />ening family members and <br />himself with a "butcher - <br />type" knife, according to a <br />news release. <br />When they arrived, the <br />man was standing in front <br />of the family residence with <br />SAN MATEO COUNTY <br />the knife in his hands and <br />began advancing at the dep- <br />uties while screaming, "Kill <br />me, just please kill me." <br />Recognizing the man <br />might be unstable, the depu- <br />ties maintained distance and <br />verbally communicated with <br />the man to try to calm him. <br />After a brief communi- <br />cation and the visual pres- <br />ence of a police K-9, the <br />man dropped the knife and <br />"peacefully laid down on the <br />ground as instructed." <br />The man was trans- <br />ported to a local psychiat- <br />ric emergency center for a <br />mental health evaluation. <br />— Kevin Kelly <br />Pedestrian killed in car collision <br />A pedestrian was killed <br />after being hit by a car while <br />crossing El Camino Real <br />near the Shops at Tanforan <br />on Saturday evening, ac- <br />cording to San Bruno police. <br />Officers were called at <br />7:57 p.m. to the 1100 block of <br />El Camino Real on reports <br />of the collision. They found <br />the victim lying in the road- <br />way south of Commodore <br />Drive. The injured person <br />was rushed to a hospital and <br />pronounced dead. <br />The victim's identity was <br />not immediately released <br />SAN BRUNO <br />pending notification of fam- <br />ily. <br />The driver stopped at the <br />scene.
