ANALYSIS
Due to State budget cuts to the Redwood City School District (RCSD) several years
ago, physical education programs were eliminated. The Sequoia Healthcare District
Board approved a large investment under their “Healthy Schools Initiative” to fill the
critical need for children to be physically active during the school day. The Parks,
Recreation and Community Services Department and the Peninsula Covenant
Community Center partnered to provide a comprehensive physical education
curriculum that proved to be very successful. Comments from administrators at the
School District include:

“This is the best thing to happen to this school in a long time. As long
as I’ve been here”. Assistant Principal, Selby Lane School.
“It gives me peace of mind to know that we have these coaches here at
Hawes. They work so well with the kids.” Principal, Hawes School.
“We’re so happy to have you (PE+) here. These kids haven’t had
anything as structured as this in a long time. They really need it and
we’re happy to have you.” Principal, Henry Ford School.
Additionally, highlights from last year’s fitness results from the beginning to the end of
the school year are as follows:
· 1st graders able to run ¼ mile without stopping went from 54.4% to 89.8%
· 1st graders able to perform proper push-ups from 36.2% to 78.8%
· 3rd graders able to complete proper sit-ups from 17.6% to 63.6%
· 4th graders able to complete proper sit-up from 27.4% to 71.1%
· 5th graders reduced mile time on average over 1 minute
· 5th graders able to complete trunk lifts from 53% to 90.2%
The benefit of a strong partnership between PCC and PRCS allows us to share
resources and curriculum knowledge, meet State standards, leverage School District
relationships, and build our youth outreach and wellness initiatives.

ALTERNATIVES
The Council could choose not to sign the Agreement thereby foregoing the delivery
of the program.

6.1.D. - Page 3
