The benefits for children <br />without disabilities are also profound. They develop a reduced fear of human <br />differences accompanied by increased awareness and personal principles. They learn <br />to form warm and caring relationships through increased confidence and compassion. <br />The opportunity to play with others helps strengthen and maintain physical, emotional, <br />psychological, and social well-being for us all. <br />On September 12, 2016, the City Council approved an agreement with the Magical <br />Bridge Foundation to create this universal playground in Red Morton Park. Since this <br />time, City staff, SSA Landscape Architects, and the Magical Bridge Team have been <br />working diligently on community outreach efforts, fundraising, research, play equipment <br />lists, and design options. <br /> <br />ANALYSIS <br />The cost to design and build a fully inclusive and accessible playground for all has <br />escalated due the need to include ramps, rubberized surfaces, unique play elements, <br />and specialized equipment. The partnership between the Magical Bridge Foundation <br />and the City and the vision for the Magical Bridge Playground in Redwood City has <br />energized the community and funders. Over $2M has been raised to date, and more <br />sponsors are still coming forward. Design efforts continue, and we have completed the <br />35% completion drawings. <br /> <br />The teams are meeting weekly to meet sponsor and community expectations to deliver <br />the project in 2018. The time and scope of effort required by SSA Landscape Architects <br />have significantly increased, and the amendment includes the additional tasks and fees <br />needed for this project. <br /> <br />Amendment No. 1 includes all work associated with those services in “Exhibit A” for a <br />total of $341,530 for a total aggregate amount of $687,374. <br /> <br />ALTERNATIVES <br />Council may choose not to approve Amendment No. 1 in the amount of $341,530. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br />Funds for the design of the Magical Bridge Playground have been appropriated in the <br />Capital Improvement Program (Park Impact Fees) and significant fundraising activities <br />are being undertaken in partnership with the Magical Bridge Playground Foundation. <br />The City is contributing $1.5 million towards the construction of the Magical Bridge <br />Playground from Park Impact Fees appropriated to this project. In addition, the Magical <br />Bridge Foundation is raising nearly $2.0 million from a variety of individual donors, <br />corporations, and family foundations. The additional $341,530 to increase the time and <br />scope of the architectural agreement would come from the Park Impact Fees Fund. <br />6.1.K. - Page 2
