<br />it was quite likely that one or both
<br />would die during the operation (even
<br />today it’s still done only rarely and
<br />usually on babies or toddlers). But
<br />in the end, the sisters themselves
<br />decide they are,if not happy in the
<br />ordinary sense of the word, at least
<br />wholeheartedly loved and admired by
<br />the other.That’s a connection that’s
<br />obvious to all.
<br />Lynn Grant’s simple, effective sce-
<br />nic design works well morphing from
<br />the outside of a tented side show into
<br />a courtroom, various theaters, a New
<br />York penthouse and even a large
<br />stadium in Texas.
<br />Both Andrew Heller’s sound and
<br />Keenan Molner’s lighting are effec-
<br />tive in the relatively small theater
<br />space.
<br />“Side Show” is not a musical that
<br />is presented very often, understand-
<br />ably so because of the difficulty of
<br />some of its stage effects, as well as
<br />making the twins appear to be con-
<br />joined. Carey and her crew deserve
<br />credit for taking it on and doing a
<br />creditable job of it.
<br />Sideshows are certainly a dying
<br />art (if it can be classified as art),
<br />though there’s still at least one run-
<br />ning in 2017.The Coney Island Circus
<br />Sideshow bills itself as “the last tra-
<br />ditional 10-in-1 continuous sideshow
<br />performing in a circus or amusement
<br />context.”
<br />It’s a relic, really,from an era
<br />when 24-hour-a-day media hype and
<br />improbable politics weren’t sideshow
<br />enough.
