<br /> 18.6.2.4 The Personnel Officer or his/her designee may designate the <br /> specific beginning and ending dates within the pay period <br /> requested by the employee to meet the needs of the employee and <br /> the City. <br /> 18.6.3 The employee on leave shall be returned to her original position or if that <br /> position is not in existence, to an equivalent position within her classification. <br /> 18.6.4 A maternity leave, absent physical disability, is granted without pay for the <br /> duration of leave. The employee may elect to continue medical and dental <br /> insurance coverage for up to one (1) year during this leave at her own expense. <br /> 18.6.5 An employee may coordinate a portion of her maternity leave with provisions of <br /> the Family and Medical Leave Act, as described in Section 18.9. <br /> 18.7 Leave for Pregnancy Disability <br /> 18.7.1 Employees who are working are entitled to use personal illness and injury <br /> leave for disabilities caused or contributed to by pregnancy, miscarriage, <br /> childbirth, and recovery therefrom on the same tenns and conditions governing <br /> leaves of absence for other illness or medical disability. Such leave shall not be <br /> used for child care, child rearing, or preparation for childbearing, but shall be <br /> limited to those disabilities as set forth above. The length of such disability <br /> leave, including the date on which the leave shall commence and the date on <br /> which the duties are to be resumed, shall be detennined by the employee and the <br /> employee's physician; however, the Personnel Officer may require a verification <br /> of the extent of disability through a physical examination of the employee by a <br /> physician appointed by the City at the City's expense. <br /> 18.7.2 Employees are entitled to leave without payor other benefits for disabilities <br /> because of pregnancy, miscarriage, childbirth, or recovery therefrom when sick <br /> leave has been exhausted. The date on which the employee shall resume duties <br /> shall be detennined by the employee on leave and the employee's physician; <br /> however, the Personnel Office may require a verification ofthe extent of <br /> disability through a physical examination of the employee by a physician <br /> appointed by the City. <br /> 18.7.3 The employee on leave shall be returned to her original position or if that <br /> position is not in existence to an equivalent position within her classification.
