<br /> under said doctor's care while absent. When an employee returns to <br /> work after any absence chargeable to sick leave, or as a result of an <br /> industrial absence or illness, the City may require a statement from <br /> the attending doctor that the employee is in fit physical condition to <br /> perform all the duties of his /her position. In addition, the employee <br /> may be required to undergo a medical examination at the City's <br /> expense to be performed by a doctor designated by the City, before <br /> the employee is permitted to return to work. <br /> Sick leave shall be defined as the non-job related absence from <br /> work due to illness, bodily injury, exposure to contagious disease, <br /> and caring of family members whose illness requires the worker's <br /> care. <br />18.1.3 Charge for Sick Leave <br /> Charge for sick leave used shall be on the basis of one (1) hour for <br /> each hour used; provided, however, that sick leave shall be charged <br /> for only those hours when the employee was absent from work. <br />18.1.4 Sick Leave Accrual Cap <br /> In the event an employee has accumulated the maximum sick leave <br /> credits ofthe one thousand nine hundred twenty (1,920) hours and <br /> the employee becomes so severely ill that he/she exhausts his/her <br /> sick leave, the Human Resources Director may, upon written <br /> recommendation ofthe employee's department head, authorize <br /> additional sick leave to include any sick leave in excess of the one <br /> thousand nine hundred twenty (1,920) hour maximum which may <br /> have been lost due to the maximum limitation. Any such additional <br /> sick leave authorized by the Human Resources Director shall not <br /> exceed the number of sick leave hours the employee could accrue in <br /> a six (6) month period. <br />18.1.5 Credit for Unused Sick Leave <br /> An employee may elect to receive compensation in lieu of sick <br /> leave credits for any calendar year by requesting payment of unused <br /> sick leave in writing to the Director of Finance on or before <br /> December 1, ofthat year. Payment shall be made at twenty-five <br /> percent (25%) ofthe value of the unused for that calendar year at <br /> the salary for the year the payment is being made, and shall be <br /> made after December 31. There shall be no payment in lieu of <br /> accumulated sick leave benefits for years prior to such calendar <br /> year. <br /> 30 <br />
