In other words,there are not 480 inbound cars,but only 250, <br /> indicating that walking/biking etc is already assumed to take place(even though this <br /> assumption is not very reasonable given the less-safe conditions that exist for small children <br /> ages 5-11 traveling alone in industrial zoning and where large trucks frequent the driveways <br /> interfacing Charter Street serving the school). I recently served on a case where a grown <br /> woman was crushed by a large truck making a right-turn where the driver stated he never <br /> even saw the woman (but cc video reveals that she was in the cross walk and could not <br /> avoid the truck turning in to her). Small children are at even higher risk of these kinds of <br /> accidents,and where there are higher numbers of trucks(such as Charter Street). <br /> 4. PRISM Engineering original statement: "A child could be walking along the sidewalk, and <br /> because of a large truck or car parked immediately adjacent to the driveway, they cannot be <br /> seen(too short)by drivers on Charter Street. It is not inconceivable that a child could be <br /> easily hit by an incoming turning car or truck who did not see a child just about ready to <br /> enter the driveway but obscured behind the parked vehicle.." <br /> e. Hexagon response: "Even a small passenger car is taller than most elementary school <br /> children. Thus,the concern expressed by the commenter is not exclusive to the area <br /> surrounding the proposed school. Traffic turning into driveways on Charter Street will be <br /> moving at very slow speeds due to the tight turning radius caused by the narrow <br /> width of the street and driveways. " <br /> f. PRISM Engineering response:The Hexagon response was dismissive of the very real <br /> escalated concern of large trucks versus autos when it comes to pedestrians,especially <br /> children. There is a significant difference in seat height for a truck driver and they have to <br /> rely on mirrors and their vehicle can be very long. A child's height is even with the front <br /> bumper of a large truck,far below the windshield which is another 2-3 feet higher <br /> depending on hood slope. I recently served on a case where a grown woman was crushed to <br /> death by a large truck making a right-turn at a busy intersection frequented by pedestrians, <br /> where the driver stated he never even saw the woman (but cc video reveals that she was in <br /> the cross walk walking forward and could not avoid the truck turning in to her). The large <br /> truck was moving at only about 10 mph.
